480 DB Owners Club

The perception is the 3196s are time bombs so they sell for much less even though the root cause of the problem was fixed long ago (the aftercoolers)

Reading through all of the posts, Rusty put a good explanation about batteries and how to tell what battery does what etc (back in 2014)
So, I have 2 starting batteries as he explained. On my panel I have 3 battery switches. Port, Starboard, Generator. If the genny is actually the port battery too, why 3 switches?

That gen switch is to activate the gen solenoid via the port battery. You've probably got another switch to energise the gen starting circuit and a further gen starter switch.

Is the Cummins power worth the premium over the CAT?

Yes if you ask a Cummins owner! Although I've talked to quite a few people shopping 480's lately and they're all leaning toward CAT boats due to the price difference. Don't get me wrong, us QSM guys have our own issues to deal with...

Thank you for the response Crime Scene, the only item that really surprised me is that the 400 has more storage room.

In looking at the 480 market, it seems that there is generally a bit of an asking-price jump between the CAT and Cummins powered 480's that are of the same model year or just a year or two apart.

In one example, the ask for a 2002 Cummins is $94k higher than a very similar 2002 CAT.

Is the Cummins power worth the premium over the CAT?

Both my 400 and 480 were pushed by Cats. I love the Cats and have had no problems with either boat. The Cummins vs. Cat argument is much like the Ford vs. Chevy argument......both think they are right and will argue which is the best until blue in the face. To be $94k more is an over zealous seller trying to make a buck and not knowing what the boat market is. Yes, I will be waiting for the Cummins guys to chime in with their thoughts :)

I have the 660hp 3196 cats, which are the big boys in my neighborhood among boats my size. I can push the boat 32-35 depending on the boat water/fuel set up. I don't run it that hard, but it is nice to know the power is there if I need it. Research it a little. Both Cummins and Cats had some minor issues which have probably already been addressed on a 16 year old boat.

Good luck.

I also have the 660HP Cats in my boat as well. They run strong and parts/tech availability is also there. I too, think that if you find a boat that's not been sitting, then chances are the issues have already been addressed.. just my 2 cents..

Anyone have to change out the hydraulic piston that assists the hatch going up to the flybridge? Opened it up this past weekend and heard hissing sound and oil all came out. Know a part number or vendor? Thanks, Dave

I got two from my Sea Ray dealer for my 58 - they were $65 each and I could not find them online. Last summer Sea Ray had 4 left, so my dockmate and I grabbed them...Mine were 26" extended - don't know if they would be the same for you. Measure them extended and compressed; mine wee 26" X 15" 70psi. I have a P/N of 1349190.

Thanks. I did call Sea Ray and they gave me part 750-SSID-10-120 and vendor of Ameritrade 888-870-4884. After calling them I need to verify the base part number on the unit, so need to go to the boat. Will take measurements, as you suggested as well. Thanks, Carter.

Has anyone had issue with the seacock for the mains? Do you know if they are serviceable? I have one that when fully closed is allowing water through - trying to figure out how I’m going to winterize in water. Any ideas? Thanks

Russ, maybe make a new thread asking since every boat has seacocks. More people may see it. Mike
I thought of that Mike but the seacocks are different, these may be used in more than the 480 but I don’t know which - I’m looking first for info on these specific seacocks that I know are found in 480s before I go elsewhere and get a lot of responses that do not relate to these specifically. I have never seen any like them in any SR I have owned or seen -

Got it. I've wracked my brain to how to service them in the water...

Russ, is the water coming from the inboard half? I would pull the boat before messing with this issue. My concern would be if damage occurs and you are in the water. Not the best answer but if you are not 100% on if it is the inboard half or the through hull part it would lead me to be nervous about doing the his in the water.

Mine were both leaking and I was told by Apollo that they are not serviceable. Since I own a machine shop, we made new cartridges for them while I was pulled last winter which seems to be working.

What I did previously was to take the handle off and play with the adjustment until they stopped. If you put the handle on backwards it will allow you more adjustment since it doesn't hit the stop. Works best with two people, one to adjust the handle slightly while the other watches the strainer to see when the trickle stops.

This is a post from a private feed about our aft bench seat that I was planning to sell. When things ( I ) calm down, I would like to tell you how Dryboat LLC was Top Notch on addressing our boats moisture issue

Keith, I have worked non stop for the last 4 weeks to get our 480 ready for the buyer. Their surveyor OKed the moisture remediation last Saturday. Dryboat LLC and I finished sealing the air holes and barrier coated and re-bottom painted the re mediated area today. Boat was to be splashed Friday.
THERE IS A DELAY ON ABSTRACT TITLES with the USCG documentation center. 3 Weeks. TONIGHT, THE BUYER backed out of the contract cause it would be too cold to move the boat North in 3-4 weeks when the abstract title would be sent.
When I am in a better mood, I have a lot to say on this forum on situations like this and Dryboats commitment to getting the job done on time. I now know of some key areas on 480DB's to keep an eye on for water intrusion.

I have to keep the bench seat longer in case the next buyer might want it.
I am sorry. YOU have no idea. I just learned 3 hours ago that the deal was off. Over a computer problem at USCG DOC.
You will be the second to know if the seat isn't wanted by the next owner.
I am going to post this on the main forum as well.
Again sorry Chris

That’s where I was going - I knew someone had to have experienced this! Thank you!
And I agree with not messing with them in water, I will haul but I would prefer not to have to now and just for this-

New cartridges? Can you explain? - thx

The original stems were made out of bronze and have a key that fits into the slot on the ball. The key had become worn and would not close the valve completely due to the sloppy fit. We made new nylon bushings and stems out of 2205 SST. We also had to make some special tools to remove the stem.

Starting my spring list of things to do on the boat. Batteries and Zincs are on the list. Which battery is preferred over the next? I have the 908D batteries. Where are the zincs located and how hard are they to access? I have the Cats 3196. I am still in the learning curve on this boat, so any info is appreciated.

I also spilled some oil (small amount) in the engine room. I have cleaned it up, but wanting to degrease the floor before the season starts. Any suggestions on what cleaner to use?
Thanks,
Keith
