48 DA Owners Club

Hey TNT at 2675 RPM's what are you seeing as your top speed and fuel burn and do you know what your optimum RPM, speed and fuel burn? Very curious how I match up.

Thanks,
JB

Hey JB. At 2675 we're right at 29.9 kts top speed via GPS, and fuel burn of 27.5 GPH per side. Granted that was last fall before cleaning bottom, changing/cleaning fuel filters, prop scan/tune, fresh oil, etc. Not totally sure on the optimum cruise speed yet as we haven't had the boat long enough to dial it in yet. With my 410DA w/3126's we ran in 22-23 kts range, and it was perfect there at about 2270 RPM burning about 22.5 GPH total. I've run this boat a little in the same 22-23 kts range via GPS, and it seems to be about 2200-2250 RPM and about 20 GPH per side or so. Obviously this boat is drinks a lot more fuel, but it's darn near twice as heavy and has about 1/3 more horsepower.

What kind of numbers are you seeing?

-Tom

Very similar numbers, If were on a long trip I like to cruise at 75% load (2300 RPM @ 25 MHP) See performance pics.
What kind of issues have you experienced or upgrades have you made since you purchased your 48?

Thanks for sharing JB. I'll try to remember to post my numbers when I have more information.

My boat only had 370 hours on it when I purchased it, and I'm the 3rd owner. Original owner from Chicago put around 330 hours on it. The 2nd owner used it as a base camp/cottage at the Cedar Point Marina in Sandusky Ohio. I believe there was some serious deferred maintenance by the 2nd owner.

As far as issues, and upgrades...it's hard to know where to begin. I'm super picky, and I'll try to remember everything.

Issues:
-Repaired numerous water leaks
-Replaced broken water pressure regulator
-Fixed peeling paint in lower bilge
-Replaced water pump
-Found and install flappers on thru hull exhaust
-Replaced temp switch in starboard exhaust
-Replaced charger for thrusters
-Replaced cockpit fridge
-Replaced air compressor for horn
-Replaced VHF
-Had the bottom painted (probably 50% was bare)
-Props scanned, and tuned. Apparently there's a known burning problem on the roots of the props on the 48DA's hull design? Here's a quote from Holland Propeller
"The burns are caused by low pressure zones - there is turbulence created forward of the propellers and the water boils which eats at the blade roots, and makes them deform."
-Rebuild both vacuum pumps on the heads. I lost count at 6 tampons on the forward head.

Upgrades:
-All new HDTV's (4 in total), and added a sound bar in the salon.
-Installed Intellian s6HD satellite antenna
-Installed redundant VHF & 2nd antenna
-Added the ring from a stainless thru hull exhaust to the A/C outlet
-Had the stereo system rewired correctly
-All new LED's throughout the entire boat
-Red/White/Blue LED's in the cockpit
-All new custom mattresses
-Added 2 new Axiom 15" MFD's
-Upgraded GPS antenna to the RM150 (had an outdated RM125)
-New black and chrome steering wheel from the new L class boats
-Added Garelick footrests to both helm seats

Other than that it was just a lot, and I mean a lot of cleaning.

What type of issues have you had, and upgrades have you done?

-Tom

Wow! You have done a lot in a short period of time. My list is probably as long with different items and some of the same but that is over a 2 year period going on 3 this year. We purchased in Oct 2015 and only had her for 2 weeks before we put her away for the winter so it gave me plenty of time over the winter to plan all of my upgrades and maintenance items. Engines had 500 hr when we purchased it from the original owner and it was in pretty clean condition but a lot cleaner now.

Issues:
- Replaced both batteries for the bow thruster
- Replaced the bow thruster charger (reason the batteries were bad)
- Sea Ray Navigator was not functioning so replaced with another e120
- Replaced anchor locker gas extension
- Replaced airsep filters (originals were shot)
- Replaced intake and turbo hoses (cracking)
- Replaced intake strainer cap (cracked)
- Replaced disfunctional cockpit ice maker with Norcold refrigerator
- Repaired air horn
- Repaired oil extractor pump (replaced impelled and gaskets)
- R & R port water pump (squealed and finally started leaking)
- R & R both thermostats
- Replaced broken light in forward head and shower
- Replaced SS exhaust flappers
- Repaired oil cooler cover (covered under Cummins recall)
- Replaced rudder packing with new no maintenance inserts
- Replaced both toilet bowl gaskets

Upgrades / Maintenance:
- Replaced all aft canvas with navy blue (like it better than stock)
- Replaced bow cushion canvas (same navy blue) and hardware
- Replaced all lights (cabin, cockpit & engine comp) with LED's and cockpit installed white/blue
- Had stress cracks in arch repaired
- replaced a good portion of the hull black boot stripe
- Replaced main batteries
- Replaced strip lighting on stbd control switch panel
- Installed access hatch panel on salon pump out box for easy maintenance
- Replaced VHF radio
- Replaced master bedroom TV
- Replaced Cockpit TV and installed on arch with a swing out mount
- Replaced all cockpit stereo speakers
- Raised height of captain and co-captain seats. Had custom aluminum blocks made for this. We love the increased height.
- Relocated the salon, and both bedroom air conditioner thermostat probes for more accurate reading of thermostat.

This is the list outside of the usual maintenance items (filters, impellers, zincs, bottom paint) that will continue to grow as time goes on, There is always something to repair, maintain and customize. I actually enjoy the journey of customizing and bringing a boat up to my satisfaction.

It would be interesting to hear what others have also done on their 48DA's

If either one of you sells in the next year or two please let me know

I think my wife would kill me, but one never knows. I did similar stuff to my 410DA, and got way over market value and she was thrilled.

JB your boat sounds great, and it reminded me of a few things I'd forgotten I'd done. What I'd like though is a little more information on a couple things you did.
- Can you share what you did for an access panel for the salon pump out box? I clean mine very regularly.
- Also where are the salon, and bedroom air conditioner thermostat probes? Ours are terribly inaccurate!

-Tom

LOL... That's funny....Sounds like we have a deal working itself out here... and yes I have done all this and more... Just good to see you guys reinvesting into a great product... Keep having fun

Tom I will take some pics over the weekend of a few different things and post them up for you to see.

Thanks JB. I really appreciate the help!

Tom here are a few pics of some of the upgrades to the salon sump box and the mounting of the cockpit TV. You should be able to find the temp probes coiled up and tied to the A/C units. Mine were so I cut the zip ties off and extended the probes (they have pretty good length available) if you can find a concealed location where the probe can get a better temperature read in the room your cooling/heating and be sure it cannot be damaged by anyone coming in contact with it.
I also attached pics of my helm seats that I raised 3" by having two aluminum blocks fabricated for each seat. My wife and I love how they came out and the height we now have when sitting and I am 6'2' tall so it really gives me good view over the bow. I can always put them back to stock if the next owner does not like it because there were no other modifications needed to be made to the seats or hardware.

Thank you JB. The upgrades look great! Looks like I have some more work to do!

Does anyone have problems with water pressure at the galley facet ? I have good water pressure everywhere but in the galley. I have cleaned the hand held screen but still do not have more than a trickle at this location

I would unscrew the spray head that holds the screen and run the faucet to see if you get good water flow and maybe if there is something in the line it will flow out.

When I bought my boat it came with a lot of extra brand new Zinc's that I do not need. I would like to sell them as I do not need them and they are taking up space in my garage. if interested please contact me.

Bump ]My boat came with a new blue aft canvas / isinglass rear cover that is made to enclose the upper cockpit to allow the helm station be enclosed with the salon. It has not been out of the boxes that it came in so it new and ready to be used by another 2004 -2012 48 Sundancer. I would be happy to make someone a very good deal on this custom made cover. Please PM if interested.[/QUOTE]

I had that problem about 2 weeks ago. It turned out to be a clogged up supply lines, but only in the galley faucet for some reason. This was after I changed out the filter in the center hold that we call the basement. See below:

Has anyone towed a 20’-30’ tender to/from the Bahamas with the 48DA? I ask because there are actually a few on the market without a lift...
Thoughts?
Suggestions?
Warnings?
