460 DA Owners Thread

It depends how you have your props pitched and cupped. My original factory set had faster speed but a smaller safety margin, in other words over-propped. The mechanical 6CTA is rated for 2600 WOT but safety suggests to pull at or near 2700 rpm. I have played with two sets of props (23x25.5 and 23x26, different cups) and the ones on the boat now achieve around 2700 WOT and the cruise is 2250-2260 rpm. That translates to a 19-20 knot cruise, flat conditions, depending on fuel load and weight (do I have the tender on the platform?). WOT will be 26 knots but our boat is heavy. Fuel burn is consistent at around 26 gph.
I have dealt with two Cummins mechanics over the years and they say the same thing. Those engines are fairly bullet-proof. Keep them maintained and well cooled and you can run 90% all day although I tend to keep it around 80-85%.
Sounds like everyone has similar performance.

Not totally relevant I know, but with TAMD 74 Volvo engines we cruise at 2150 rpm and typically make 18 - 19 knots

I have never accurately measured fuel use at that speed, we seldom run for long on the plane, it is usual we cross to the Balearic Islands (100 miles) at about 1,200 rpm and and 9 knots.

Having generator issues, does anyone have a drawing that shows the wiring from the start switches from the remote start inside the boat to the generator

It’s in the wiring diagram for your specific generator. If you don’t have it I can help find it. What generator model do you have?

I have the wiring diagram from Westerbeke, but it does not accurately show the way Sea Ray wired the preheat and start switches in the cabin. It's 8.0 BTDA. It was running, but would shut down at various times. Now it starts, but shuts down after releasing the preheat, been thru all of the sensors they are working, thinking a loose connection somewhere.

the pre heat bypasses the sensors. I had a similar issue last season and thought it was the wire from the cabin to the generator. It turned out to be a bad sensor. I believe it was the oil sensor. i would double check the sensors i think there are 3 on there

There is a fuse buried on the generator as well that can cause this symptom. What if you start it in the engine room. Does the same thing happen?

it will Start from either location, will run as long as I hold the preheat, I'll recheck the oil sensors

I'm betting its a sensor. the wire on the the top of the sensor for water temp gets frayed sometimes, so check that as well.

Any idea why the same (Westerbeke) genny would start from the panel but not directly in the engine room? I'm not concerned since I usually want to start it from the cabin anyways but I'm curious. It used to start directly but not any more.

That’s the fuse I was mentioning earlier. It’s typically the other way around but anyway you need to find your fuse.

Windless issue. When I hit the helm switch to turn on the windless I hear the relay turn on but as soon as I let go of switch no power to windless. If I hold the switch down the windless works. I had to do this to get the anchor up tonight ant help would be appreciated

Found the problem, a bad connection on the exhaust temp sensor, the wire looked good, but with the shrink wrapped connection you couldn't see the wire was broke.

Good that you were able to find it, on to the next repair

Has any of you 460 owners drilled a drain behind the captains chair in the floor? Just wondering. It is a pain in the butt when you wash the cockpit that the water pools behind on the floor.

Not me but I totally understand why you want to do this. I just shop vac it out when I'm done. Remeber the deck is cored so its not just drilling a hole as you would want to seal it. Also, if you did the drain thing, it would drain under the rear facing lounge so then it would be trapped in that area...

Yep!
Just was thinking someone came up with a good idea on it. This and the track on the forward head shower are really the only two bad designs of the 460.... but hey my drinks are cold , sounds system rocks, boat runs great and more days on the boat this year than last . .... and a amazing girlfriend that helps out and wants to learn more about running - docking and servicing the boat so if that is the only two things that gets my OCD in a twist I am doing pretty good.
