460 DA Owners Thread

Thanks for the comments on the refrigerator. We really like having cold drinks in the cockpit as it keeps everyone from going down below as often.

I'm thinking I'll have to do the 8k unit in the master birth as well, did you buy the sound shield?

Cheryl: sorry to hear about your transmissions but it has my curiosity... think you could post a pic of the screens and maybe that material you found in them? I would love to double check ours.

Sure-- I should be over at the boat tomorrow (Friday) and able to take and post a pic. Folk can then keep on the lookout should something like this occur. Doesn't sound too common, thankfully. I may not have noticed it but my mechanic was in the engine room and noted it. I sucked the stuff up with the vacuum and it has been returning.

The 8k unit works wonderfully in the master birth and when we are not on the boat I leave that unit running with a fan blowing back into the salon and it keeps the entire cabin cooled nicely.
No I did not get the sound shield and It hasn't been a problem.

Here's the pic of the port gear unit. It's a little dark but you should be able to identify the "screen" as well as some small black pieces of material that are around and below it.

Sorry the pic is so small. Seems my storage space was used up with only two photos stored - clearly I'm not doing something correctly.

Thanks to both of you! Cheryl. If you sponsor the site then you get more space to upload pictures. So does the screen come out?

Doesn't matter. The rubber part of the tortional coupler that is failing is between the engine and transmission inside the bell housing. If you remove the ecreen all you can do is say "I wish I could reach back there". The good news in this process is that Cummins now offers a kit to replace just the rubber pucks in the damper.....you no longer have to replace the entire flywheel/coupler assembly. This repair can be done in the boat by just separating the transmission from the engine and moving it forward to gain access inside the bell housing.

Thanks Frank! You read my mind once again. We need more "boat nuts" like you! Wish you the best Cheryl!

Can anybody offer advice on the potential reason that my front windscreen vent opened last week, we have spent a week away in Ibiza, and now back at base on the Spanish Mainland, the vent will not shut.

I have searched the Forum for relevant posts but can not locate any, although I'm sure they are there.

Any guidance appreciated, need it closed before we go back home on Wednesday

Happened to to me once on my 38. I think I held the switch too long and opened it too far and it wouldn't close - I had someone apply slight pressure to the vent whilst I activated the switch. Hopefully it's that easy for you too.

Graham, If it opened on its own, then you might look at the switch. I'll look at my schematics to see if I can locate the breaker or fuse.

The breaker is located behind the door below the steering wheel. There is a panel called control station breaker panel. Looks like push to close type breakers.

Thanks folks for the additional information on the transmission. My person here has done a number of these replacements. Only issue is he's very busy, so it might be winter work.

Interestingly, I talked with someone else who is currently having this issue with his boat and his mechanic told him not to worry about it until the gear fails. I'm not quite sure on all that, but it did make me feel better momentarily ;)

Care to share what the fix was?

No problem........

Before inquiring on here, I had tried to slide the switch from the panel to check it, it would not come all the way out so I unscrewed the complete panel, and found two of the wires off the switch. Replacing them made no difference, so obviously they had come off when I tried to get the switch out.

After your reply here, I found the pop out fuse was out, resetting it fixed the problem,, but the opening / closing action was labored.

I lubricated the two shafts on the actuators, now all good, working smoothly and the fuse no longer pops out.

Great. Just had the covers off the actuators for re-finish. Did not think to lube the shafts. I'll put it on the list as the vent does seem to open slowly.

I am looking at the 2003 to 2006 460DA's and was told by a salesman that the Cummins 480CE have a problem with dropping valves and costing up to $25,000 to repair. I'm a farmer and have all kind of diesel motors in equipment and semi trucks and have never had a problem with any kind of diesel engines such as dropping valves. Has anyone have knowledge of this problem or is that just a salesman talking? Thank you for any input.

It's a great engine. Having said that there is a history of valve seat failures. Cummins had a part number change for the cylinder head that fixed the problem. The real problem, however, was over proping the engine. Search boatdiesel.com and you will find a great deal of information.
