460 DA Owners Thread

Question about my AC Main Distribution panel. What is the purpose of 2 volts meters? My owner's manual only shows 1 volts meter for a 240 volts system. As you can see only 1 of mine is registering voltage. Last weekend I noticed when connect to another slip shore power both meters registered 240 volts. At my home slip I have noticed voltage on both before. What does this mean? Or is it simple a voltage meter going out? Any thought appreciated!

Is the left one tied to the Generator and the right one tied to Shore Power?

New owner of a 2000 460 at the start of August. Loving the boat but already had to put it in storage since I’m in Michigan. I have a question about the Westerbeke 8.0BTD generator. The original manual calls for 15w-30 but when we had oil samples tested the company commented we should replace with 15w-40. What is everyone else running? It has 1050 hours.

I mistyped my original question. Manual says SAE30 or 10w-30 per pic.
NotHerDecision, Did the recommendation just change over the years.

are you sure you’re looking at the manual for the diesel and not gas model? I’m surprised your manual says that tbh, and I’ve changed probably 50 generators and have not seen that spec.

now with the new synthetic oil many people have changed to 5w-40 but that’s another discussion.

I’m interested in what the others in this thread will say as well

Says diesel. Gen is a 2000.

Well maybe I am flat wrong. Every Westerbeke I know has 15w-40

Diesel engines have significantly higher loads on bearings; especially connecting rod and wrist pins. That oil film in those areas needs to handle those loads both on start up as well as hot running. Always keep the winterized number at 15. Never ever run 0 or 5 in a diesel engine. Depending upon where the boat is operated (colder areas vs warmer areas) the hot running number can be 30 or 40. The Mitsubishi and Kabota engines that the generators use are pretty resilient but their life is totally dependent upon the oil. This is not an area to experiment in my opinion. I use the tried and true Shell Rotalla in all of my diesel applications.

Yep, I figured but if you read through the numerous threads here, you'll see claims of 20+ mph @2200. I'm guessing some folks might be referring to running at 1/4 fuel, no water and 1-2 people onboard --- not exactly the type of boating I do. I'm typically running heavy with 1/2 (or more) fuel, 1/2 or more of water (I anchor out a lot) and who knows how many pounds of snacks (hey, my wife and I love to eat!). Oh yes and liquor.... we need that.

im wrong this while at anchor. Just finished a short trip and am seeing approx 17.2knots @2230rpm. I’m pretty happy with that and it sounds close to what everyone else is reporting.

I’m embarrassed to say what was causing some of the slow down. I literally had a a swimming pool I was dragging along with me. I won’t mention any names but the dinghy bilge cap was still in and the dinghy was more than half full of water. We have a sunbrella over it hence why I didn’t notice.

note to self - check the dinghy next time.

Hello and we have a 2000 410 with gas engines and am thinking of upgrading to a 2003 460, any helpful insights to help us make a decision.
What is swaying me is the diesels, hardtop, washer/dryer and of course more room.

I have 2004 460 with hardtop, hydraulic platform and Cummins diesels and love it! Oh and it’s nice and wide and handles amazing in foul weather

Thank you, I think that size we’d still be easy enough to get in and out of all the areas we go and also be better traveling with the younger grandkids.

I had 41 prior to this and believe me , this boat is easier to handle. I had twin mercruiser 502 in previous boat and soent a lot of time getting fuel too LOL.
