Hello everyone , I'm the new guy on the block and want to say hello !

I signed up to learn more about Sea Rays ! I've had my share of boats , my last was a 37' Egg Harbor . Sold that some years back , now want to get back in the game !

I'm looking at a 1988 46' Sea Ray with Cat's ! Can anybody out there give me any info. , good and bad !

Thanks, Greg Ricci

It's a pretty heavy boat for those small Cats. The 550 hp Detroits were a better choice. If you are set on the 46 there are many out there.

think so?

They would be 3208's, not 31X6's.... I've never driven one with Cats, but the few 460DA's with 3208's had plenty of guts.

The DA isn't necessarily the tank that the EC was, but the straight-shaft layout makes a big difference in weight distribution.

Its a trade off, you either get the little slower 3208s that will provide you with plenty of longevity (if they are 375 HP versions) or you get the hopped up Detroits that will run great in the boat but could possibly need some more costly repairs if run hard in its prior life.

Never tested one, but I can’t really figure the 3208 being adequate for the 460EC. They are, for me, just right for the 390. Take a fully loaded 460 with a fouled bottom and it will be sluggish to say the least...
I wish we could hear from somebody who actually tested the boat!

Diesels are funny that way though. You can put a 3116 in a 33 Express and a 450 Dancer, and both owners will say their boat is adequately powered.

Look at the applications for the Cummins B: you'll find them in everything from 30 foot cruisers to 45 aft-cabins.

There's also a difference in the torque curve and feel between the DD and Cat. Again, I've never been on a Cat 460EC, but I wouldn't be surprised if the difference isn't as noticeable as you'd think.

I said "just right" because I think my boat is a little underpowered. When the bottom is clean is ok, but it suffers a lot from fouling on her bottom. To keep her performance consistent I usually have her bottom sprayed in the middle of the summer season. So a couple hundred more HP would be much appreciated.
And the 460 look so muuuuch bigger than the 390!
