454 overheating

Was that last post enough ducking and weaving?

I am sure someone will pounce and rip it to shreds. I feel like giving some red balls and fisking it myself.

BTW: When I had my overheat problems, I was somehow ingesting air into the cooling system from the outdrive. It happened at high RPM. And it choked up my cooling system, causing no end to grief.

As long as you made the... ducking and weaving reference...I think it's fitting to say that you knocked yourself out.

Yeah. . .no sweat. I take no offense at being corrected for a clear technical error.

It takes a big man...

Back to my problem boys, what would cause my engine to run normal most of the time at IDLE and then spike from time to time. I cannot image it would be the impeller. If the impeller was bad I would assume the temp would always run high. It seems like a sticky thermostat would be more reasonable assumption. Again, I am not a mechanic, so that is why I am posting, so what do you guys think.

Does you t-stat housing look like this?

tstat12.jpg

you could have sticky balls:smt043as seen above or i have also seen that brass ring corrode and come apart and cause some weird problems before, so get a t/stat and all of the gaskets and take it apart for inspection/replacement and go from there. it wouldn't be the first time i've heard of a t/stat causing intermittent problems

Mark, I am embarrassed to say I don't think I have any balls :-( I tried adding an image to this post showing my diagrahm but had no luck pasting it into this post.

This is the one for the big block. The first one was for a small block. I don't see much of a difference between the 2. The link you posted is just like this one here. Look up on www.ebasicpower.com and see if you come up with the same as this one.

Thanks all, that helps. I will check it out this weekend. So, my plan of attack is to replace the thermostat, check my balls, and if that does not work replace the impeller.

So, how do you add a image to a post. I have tried cutting and pasting but nothing happens?

Thanks you guys, I feel like a man again........ I DO HAVE BALLS!!!!! I am so excited. But, unfortunately they were not stuck or was there any debris. Now, I will replace the thermostat.

454 Long Block can produce some problems with cooling; here are some: 1. You are cooled by the impeller on your Alpha One (Bravos require engine pump) unless you also have additional water pump attached to engine belt, check one or both; 2. you can start to have clogging in the exhaust risers wich will limit cooling at high rpm when engine is laboring; naturally it comes down a bit when you idle and rev engine; 3. check thermostat and housing for proper operation. Just a few points and assuming you are raw water cooled. 4. If a water pump starts to go one indicator will be water seepage thru the front bearing and you will see rust stains. Give it yoru best to check all things noted. Back to the Risers: next time you start your engine cold; let it come up to temperature; carefully place your hand on top of each riser, (Careful!!!) if one of them is noticably hotter than the other, that may tell you that one is clogging or needs repalcement. If you plan on keeping this boat, be wise and get a Engine Service Manual direct from Mercruiser (not generic brand) have yoru serial number; they can send you the proper service manual which also has valuable troubleshooting data; it will cocst you about $75 bucks for manual and shipping.

Did you play with your balls? You should probably pull each ball a few times just to make sure that they are free and seat well.

thanks chollyjohn and I do have a service manual.

And osd9, I let my wife play with them and they were free and clear
