I've got a 97 290 sundancer with a merc 454 w/ bravo 1 drive. The last few times I've had it out its done this odd thing where it runs fine for an hour or so, we'll stop and have lunch and about 5 minutes after starting it for the second time it starts bogging down and cuts out. It continues to start each time but if you try to accelerate over idle it cuts out and I notice a strong odor of gas. Seems like it's being flooded with fuel .

It's got a 2 barrel carb. Sound like the float tanks in the carb? Has new plugs, wires, oil, distributor cap. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I don't think it's carbureted I have a 97 454 actually two of them they are EFI meaning electronic fuel injected throttlebody looks like carburetter but it's actually Fuel injection I think that's what you have could be the injectors are clogged not spring fuel evenly you could probably see that if you took the flame arrester off and watched how the Fuel comes out whether it sprays or drips

Are you sure about the 2 barrel carb? Never heard of a 454 with a 2 barrel. Is the fuel pump electric or mechanical? You need to do a fuel pressure test first. If in the 4-6 lb. range then a carb rebuild is most likely in order. My bet is you have a 4 barrel Rochester Quadrajet or 4 barrel Carter AFB.

I had very similar symptoms - turned out to be a faulty fuel pump. Replaced the pump and I have not seen the same symptom. My pump appeared to be factory installed, so almost 18yrs of working ok. My pump is mechanical, not electrical.

Replacement is easy - when you are at the dock when you do it :)

Not sure by any means that it's a two barrel, buddy took a look and said he thought it was. Hopefully this picture helps. I appreciate the feedback.

And the risers/exhaust are getting replaced this week. Much needed as you can see.

Different age of engine but when a fuel pump went on us we could do 1400RPM after that the engine stalled

You can't see fuel spray on a injected motor in the intake.

You can on an efi throttle body fuel injected motor it's no different than looking down the neck of a carburetter the injector sit right on top of the throttle body

Carter carb.... sounds like a rebuild, or replacement with Edelbrock 1409....

Thanks for the feedback guys. Thinking I'm going to swap out the fuel pump and throw on the Edelbrock. I noticed you said 1409 but the carb shop told me the 454 takes the 1410. Are the benefits to either model and is it a direct bolt on? Anyone ever dealt with National Carburetors in Jacksonville?

Also thinking I'd like to add an inline fuel pressure gauge on whichever Edelbrock I go with. Any thoughts on placement?

Thanks

Not trying to nit pick, but might be time to take a look at that riser in the picture, would hate to see that motor start taking drinks of water.

Not nit picking at all. Replacing the risers next week as it's obviously needed.

These carbs can be rebuilt successfully. So long as its done properly there is no reason that it wont perform like new.Finding a decent carb guy is the hardest part...

+1.....if you are reasonably handy with tools and can follow instructions you can rebuild a carb....lots of instructions available and rebuild kits.....just soak the carb in a bucket of carb cleaner overnight before you start the rebuild.....
