454 engine generation?

I moved this question from the Classic forum...

I have a 1988 454 carb engine. I will be replacing the oil pan on it. How can I find out which generation engine I have?
I searched this forum and found that stamped steel valve covers indicate a "mark-4" or Gen IV engine version. Is that correct?

Yes a 1988 454 is a Gen 1V unless it has been changed at some point.
