450 Sundancer question

Yep.............

The 420hp 3126's burn 26.0 gph at 2400 rpm which is max rated cruise. Pull 'em back to 2200rpm (2200-2250 is a sweet spot on this boat) and that drops to 20 gph.

Here's what Sea Ray says:

WOT Speed = 36 mph
Cruise Speed= 31 mph

I have the same boat with 350 hp 3116's and I can tell you from experience that these numbers are high. The only way those speeds were achieved were with no load, and the boat very light (no fuel, water, waste, etc.) Bases on our speeds you should expect a top speed of 28-30 mph and a real cruise speed of 25-26 with 3126's. The 450DA tends to be load sensitive and you will run about 2 kts faster after burning off about 1/2 the fuel in the tanks.

Thanks Frank

I am looking at a 1999 450. I may pick your brain about the boat a little further if things get more serious.

Yes you do Frank!
And i'm cruising the ICW right now with my 450 dancer because of all your great info, knowledge, guidance and support. Thanks. My boat actually runs better and seemingly faster at 2200-2300 than at the 2400 cruising rpm. I had to get across the Albarmele sound today when it got snotty, 2350 rpm, full water, 3/4 fuel and all the gear with some chop and wind, 21kts. Hearing the cats hum harmoniously all day is like a soothing song, very relaxing, yet exciting. I love my cats. The 450 is a great boat. Buy one!

Hee Dave,

It's not a like a soothing song...

It's like a Sirens Song' !

Peter

I know the CAT very well....I have the 3126's in my 380.

The 450 would be a step up in size and weight!

I cruise the northeast, long island sound area, and we have been know to run into 8-10 FT seas running out to Block Island, Martha's Vineyard etc.

Amen to that Peter! And yes it is a good boat to be in if caught out in th rough, my wife feels "safe" with our boat do to its weight and power.

just to jump off topic for a second here.....Dancin Dave....how is your "WINTERIZATION" cruise going so far ???? Maybe you could start a new thread with your adventures....

good luck and safe trip...

later,

We could probably start a new forum index called "guys who got great deals on clean used Diesel Sundancers thanks to Frank" Dancin Dave and I would have adjoining slips on that forum. have a gret cruise, Dave

Guys, quit it....I'm getting the big head!

Actually, I found my own treasure several years ago and I'm not in the market, but the art of the deal is in my blood so I do it w/ OPM......other people's money. Thanks Skip, Dave, Jack, Bill and Steve....and soon, Dom.

Hey Frank,
We are probably not too far away from having any SRO alum (or current Club Sea Ray) forum member being able to walk into a Sea Ray dealership and telling the salesman, "Hi, I am here to buy the biggest slightly used diesel Sea Ray that I can get my wallet around."

So then the salesman grins inwardly...until the SRO/Club Sea Ray alum drops the bomb...."and my friend Frank W is here (virtually speaking) to help me out!"

I then imagine the salesman having a biological event in his drawers and heading for the exit.

You have just got to love it.

regards

Frank is actually not getting all the credit that he deserves. While everyone knows that Frank is an expert on all diesel motors and big boats he also is a great reference on small boats.

I will never own a big boat in upstate SC but his philosophy on the art of the deal sure helped me get my little boat last year. Thanks Frank.

Do ya'll have a junior membership available for the small gas powered boaters? Of course it would have to be surveyed and proven to be in excellent condition. At that point in the membership process we could discuss the terms for wrapping our wallet around the membership.

Have a great day

Paul

Guys with any luck, and alot of prayers I may need a slip with you guys. After a survey failure on a 40DA, out of the blue the 45DA broker calls and says all the "owner issues are resolved" and he will take my last offer. Papers are siged now to the survey. Please keep your fingers crossed for us. I have now made 5 i say five trips to Florida looking for the right boat. I know Frank is out of touch right now but without his help I donot know what would have happened! Thanks to all you guys that so freely share your great knowlegde. IT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!JC
