Hi everyone,

I’ve been pretty quiet on the forum lately so I hate to now post with bad news... our Sea Ray was broken into this morning at our marina in Seattle - Fisherman’s Terminal. The thief used our own tools to force open our cabin door and helped himself to my laptop and a few other items. Thankfully we had just added a mobile hotspot and security cameras so I have good video of this jerk.

It’s clear from the video that he knows his way around boats. He looked in every storage compartment in the cabin and in the cockpit. He left my husband’s heart medication out which indicates he was looking for drugs along with valuables. I’m mostly upset that now we’ll need to pay to have our door latch replaced along with the other items we lost.

If you’re from the Seattle area and recognize this jerk, please let me know.

Thank you!!

Sandy

Hi Sandy, I am sorry to hear about this as we had our $30k claim last year and now insurance has our rates... We do not have wi-fi in our marina but I now have the Simplisafe alarm system, it is cellular based with motion, door, freeze, CO and high water sensors all added. I would encourage you to check into it. Also, check with your marine insurance and your house insurance carriers as this is usually overlap.

So sorry to hear of this news. I will share on social media (without objection).

Sandy, I'd check with the marina people. This guy may work at the marina or in one of the many retail or marine businesses around there.

Mark, would you mind opening a new thread to show/explain how your alarm system works? We don't have Wifi and I would like to have an alarm on board.

I hope they/you catch the scumbag. Out of curiosity at the end of the video is that him saying f*ck as he notices the camera?

Yes - yes it is! He then proceeded to unplug the base station for our cameras but what he didn't know is that it had already been uploaded to the cloud. Ha!

Thank you to anyone who is willing to help. Feel free to share the two links I posted. The more people who see this the better. Someone knows this guy. He came to the boat prepared to do bad things. He had gloves on and a flashlight. The VHF radio could have been for a 2nd guy/lookout but I'm thinking he was at the marina to work or train and he decided to do a little extracurricular activity before his shift.

We spent a couple of hours talking to the Port, walking around the marina and talking to fishermen, and several of the businesses and restaurants in the area. Nobody recognized him but several people asked me for a copy of the picture and video which I was only too happy to share. I'm hoping our diligence will result in this guy getting caught!!

I do have a question for you guys. This is the door latch that we have installed and that now needs to be replaced:

Is this still the best/most secure option? Because apparently it can be defeated with a hammer and a screwdriver! I'm planning on calling Sea Ray tomorrow to get more information but I hope to get information from my trusted buddies on CSR!

Thanks everyone!

I had considered the Simplisafe option however we had just had a cellular hotspot installed on our boat with an AT&T account with unlimited data so it made more sense for us to just get a camera system to add onto what we already had. We bought the Arlo cameras (on the recommendation of a fellow Sea Ray owner) and even though they've only been installed for a couple of weeks (great timing, eh?), I'm really happy with them so far.

I truly believe that any camera and additional visibility is a good thing. One of the fishermen I spoke to today recommended putting up a sign indicating that we do not keep medications, valuable or drugs on board. I don't know if that would actually work but I'm willing to try!!

What I do think will help is to put up a sign indicating that we have security cameras and that their picture/video is already up in the cloud. Something like, "If you can see this sign, I can see you. Your video is now in the cloud and on it's way to Port of Seattle Police. Welcome Aboard!!" What do you think? ;)

Sorry to hear that Sandy. What a punk and great you have security cameras. Hopefully the images will spread. We shared the video with Elliott Bay Marina too.

Thank you Tom! I am really hopeful that this guy will get caught. The video is going viral on Facebook. Methinks that thieves are very unpopular!!

So sorry to hear of this Sandy. I hope they catch the scumbag. Having been the victim of a burglary ourselves once, I know the horrible feeling of being violated that goes with it. Watching that POS go through your beautiful boat wasn’t easy I’m sure (made me angry). So I really hope they catch him fast. Glad you have the cameras.

Hearing the ba$tard realize he's been on camera the whole time - PRICELESS!!

Sandy, so sorry for your inconvenience. Hopefully it will be the last.
I have similar stickers now by the salon door/ bridge / and engine room. It may stop them from breaking the door it’s li,e putting up a beware of dog sign it makes them stop for a second and think... maybe move on. Good luck..

He's got his Yamaha sweat shirt on, maybe works somewhere that sells them? He's dressed warm, I heard him sniffling like after a cold dinghy ride. Did you go to all the other marinas? I wonder if any marinas, businesses, have security cams or maybe there are Web Cams that could catch a dinghy going past. I'd bet the radio was to call for his buddy in the dinghy when he was done shopping.

What kind of hardware are you using for your AT&T mobile hotspot? Where on your boat is that device located?
I have AT&T cell service with unlimited data and wouldn’t mind having a hotspot in the cabin on my boat.
But, I want to make sure that the hotspot can be reliably connected to from outside the boat too so along with mounting cameras in the cockpit and cabin I can mount one on the utility pole on my dock property looking down on the boat.

Our electrician installed it. The router is a MoFI http://mofinetwork.com/ Once it's set up all you need is a SIM card and you should be good to go. Ours does have an external camera to extend/amplify the signal. One thing to note is that you will need a separate line/phone number that is dedicated for the hotspot.
