420AC Thread

I don’t know much about the Mainship the Carver is nice boat have a friend that has one but is gas powered so does not perform that great. We have the 420AC and me and my wife can handle it very well just me and her. Last year put 350 Hrs. on it up[ and down the gulf coast and the 3116 cats do just fine a lot of people don’t like them but frank on this site will tell you treat them right and will get great service out of them . We cruise at 22-23 MPH 2400 RPM 24-26 Gal Hr. The 420 AC Has more room that any boat in is class sea handling good Yes has cored hull a lot of sea rays did and just get hull checked and should not be a problem. I don’t know the price on a good used one but think there a 420ac 2001 with 480 cum in Slidell for sale for 220k. Maybe some other will let you know how there’s http://www.boatpoint.com.au/reviews/2001/sports-cruiser/sea-ray/sea-ray-420-aft-cabin-9227

Any SR with a HIN (Hull ID number) that starts with SERP will have a cored bottom. Not sure about the 380AC and 370AC.

Thanks for the information. Despite the cored hull we are leaning toward the 42. Bigger is always better. Right?

the P of SERP indicates that the boat was built in the Palm Coast facility, which only made boats with cored bottoms. It's entirely possible that the 370/380 was made there as well, in which case it makes no difference which one you went with!

The serial number on our 380AC begins with SERF so I guess ours does not have a cored bottom? Either way, the hull seems sold (knock fiberglass).

We just finished a 6 day cruise with 4 adults, 3 teenagers and a dog during the hottest week of the year. We had a great time. Normally, there are just 2 adults, 1 daughter and of course the dog and we have plenty of room. The boat is perfect for us.

With the price of fuel, we go "trawler speed" all the time. We do about 9.5 MPH at 2000 RPM but we also have a starboard engine that needs work so we might do better when that gets resolved. We have had the boat out in the bay during a storm with winds gusting to 50MPH and 4 to 6 foot seas and she did extremely well; solid and stable.

We love the boat. On her every weekend. On the hook most of the time.

SERF is Merrit Island, Florida facility. Solid bottom.

VinceR,

We love our 420AC with Cats. Juat finished a 10 day vacation and while we love all the room we have our pet answer to the quetion we always get is 2. That's how many we like to sleep on board even though we could put 7 on bed conditions. Most room of any 42 on the market with the beam and lenght. You couldn't ask for a much better boat but then again I might be alittle biased.

The counter-point of all that living space is lack of maintenance space. For those of us who try to do our own you will know what I mean!

Yes it is tight but I am 250Lbs 6'3" And do all my maintenance. Gen set was the worst thing cut hatch in wall under steps fixed that.\

I have the B&G electronics set. So far I have found most components as I ferret around in cupboards and bilges but I haven't found the autopilot compass or computer. Any of you guys know where they mounted it? I plan to change it for a Garmin outfit.

Best guess would be to raise the galley stairs and look on the bulk head there as well as through the little access door to the right which gets you to where the WH, vacum cleaner and behind the combinatin w/d. The computer hardware should be under the bridge through one of the access doors and you probably will need to lay on your back and look up.

Hope this helps and let us know what you find. Being it is already August 17th isn't your boat already laid up for the winter!!!!!!!.:smt101

On another thought do you have any trouble getting 2800 at WOT with both engines when you aren't using the electronic sync? I run with 200' of chain & anchor along with full fuel and usually 50 to 75% water capcity and hit only about 2750?

under the rear seat next to the steps pull the screws at the bottom of the back lift it off and its there on the wall that where my raymarine stuff was

My WOT RPM is 2810 with 100% fuel and water. Props are 21*21.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Dug all over the place and couldn't find the B&G computer or compass. Have sent a note to Sea Ray in the hope they can help. Looks like I may be tracing wire...

I look at a 380Ac this past weekend and love this boat. Now, we gotta look at a 420AC and compare the two. THe admiral wants a dinette and a fold out couch in the salon and the 420 has them. We are in the early stages but I am leaning this way for sure. Any input would be appreciated.

My computer is under the dash by the radio amp the pump is under the radar on the wall the compass like I said is right next to the stairs going up from the salon to aft deck behind the seat back. (The compass should be mounted as near to center of the boat as possible but my stuff is all raymarine ) try looking center line of the boat

I got a reply from Sea Ray. They show the compass on the back (fwd) wall of the wet bar cabinet which is right where the aft deck lights monoplex unit is on mine. I did look down the gap where the seat back is in the salon. I can see right down there from where the VCR/DVD player etc used to be. The autopilot pump is right where yours is but I don't find an autopilot computer behind the dash at all. I am going to be pulling the ice maker to change the faucet this coming weekend. Maybe the compass is there but it would be strange for them to mount it near motors etc.

I didn't get a PM but then I did have to clear out my inbox.

Keith
