420AC Thread

Hi, I just redid the all the carpet in my entire 1997 sea ray 420 AC. I have a lot of info for you if your interested. First, I would not recommend using carpet, we used vynle woven flooring indoor and outdoor. I have lots of before and after pictures. We just bought our boat a few months ago, the previous owner let their dogs pee in the boat for a few years then passed away; it was a mess. Anyways, are you using carpet? The salon is super easy compared to the bedrooms.
Please post some pics!
Thanks....

Here are some pics but I have to take more of the front bedroom, it looks the best with the stairs. Lots of work with the interior 5 sets of stairs. I will try to get some more pics soon. We did all the removal ourselves, and paid 5k for the materials and install by professionals.

Looks Great....thanks for posting
What material did you use?
Any padding underneath it?
To gain access to eng rm, you have to pull back the floor covering?

I have to get more info on the material, I will let you know. It has a "velvet" backing instead of the rubbery stuff, not sure if I like the velvet more yet... Its slippery and soaks up water. I intended on putting padding in, because the old carpet was so thick I was afraid I would lose the soft feeling. But after about 3 weeks of new material, im not going to bother putting any pad under, the clean look and feeling is much better then having a soft feel, in my opinion. We copied the old carpet cut outs. Its easier to roll back then the old carpet was, I enter the bilge easily. You really would have to change the entry staircase in order to make the switch, fluffy stairs would not match woven vinyl. But we did everything, fly bridge, swim deck, cockpit, 3 bedrooms and salon for 5k including install. Removal was HELL, we did that ourselves. I have many pictures of removal.

This looks absolutely amazing and that's great value for your investment. Looking forward to your post on the material since we will tackle the aft deck and bridge next year. We wanted carpet in the main salon and will post pics next year. BTW, the red stools are the best!

My install guy said the material is Chilewich floor covering bought through sailright.com and called it vinyle mesh. Here are some close ups, and remember, its the "velvet" backing. They say superior and new, but thats just what the dude installing it told me so I will know more after about a year. By the way, my boat is for sale in Knoxville, always freshwater boat and always stored under roof. Someone passed away which led me to this boat, im cleaning and making appropriate upgrades for a eventual sale, no rush.

very nice job. I will be interested in how the backing works out over time.

How do you guys clean the hardtop without getting out there. I get a little nervous climbing through the middle isenglass opening then man crawling out there with cleaning supplies. It is a long way down if you fall. Just saying

Did you ever figure out how to clean the hardtop?
Checking to see if anyone has added an access to the generator to check the fluid. We have a 2002 AC and the engine room is so tight to work around.
Right now we have a broken zinc on the port engine and they will be removing the entire floor to get to it.

Dream chaser-as for cleaning the hard top I may have a solution but will have to wait to launch time to find out. Saw the pool guy using a long telescopic pole with multiple brushes attached. This is a heavy duty pole that extends 15 ft. Or can be set to any length. Unzip the middle use glass and I should be able to reach the entire top. We will see

I have a 1999 420 with a B&G Network ACP pilot. Has anyone replaced this with a newer auto pilot?
Thanks

Need to replace the ventilation blower motor in the forward head & shower on our 1996. Vent is behind the toilet bowl. Does anyone know where the motor is? I have purchased a 3" replacement motor. Thanks for any guidance on where to look.

I went to start my westerbeke 8.0 at the remote start switch on my electrical panel in the salon. It started to turn over, stopped and went dead. The switch at the panel no longer started the genny and the switch would not light up. I went to the genny in the engine room to start the genny, the alarm did not sound and it's dead. Replaced the pre-heat solenoid still nothing can't even start it from the generator itself. Has anyone had this issue, and what do you suggest?

You may want to try to repost this in the diesel thread - much better chance someone may have seen what you are experiencing

Where do you store your dinghy outboard when traveling? I have a small 2 hp. outboard that for now I secure it to the hardtop post on the aft deck but surely someone has a better way. Any thoughts? Thanks

EPC: The St Croix davits are great for sure. I have a soft bottom that I pull up on Hurley Davits but take the engine off when underway which is why I am looking for ideas to store the small outboard. On our boats there really are not to many ways I can figure out where to keep the outboard but I am sure someone here can chime in.

PO had his 3.5hp on a stand in the aft deck when underway...he also had the dinghy tied vertical on the swim platform (so the bow was facing up). I have hurley davits now w 10'AB and leave the motor on.
