420 SD vs Tiara 4300 Sovran - help me decide.

Are they not letting you put a sea trial contingency in the contract to hold the boat until spring to close on it?

I wouldn't close on any boat unless it was a STEAL or I can sea trial it fully. The majority of boat deals in winter are negotiated and then wait until spring for sea trial/remainder of survey.

Thanks to all, especially Alex and Tom. I have withdrawn the offer on this vessel, and I will wait for spring and determine if I want to do a new offer with a full engine survey to get a clearer picture of any lingering issues.

My education continues, great stuff.

Scott

Score one in the Tiara column? Sorry to hear the trouble. If this is your experience so far with this particular boat, I think it would be a bad omen.

I had a $20K escrow setup pending spring sea trial. It was not a STEAL, and I don't think I'd do it that way again.

Not really. I'm still sold on the DB, so we'll see what we can find. I'm a much smarter buyer today than 3 months ago thanks to all my invisible friends.

Scott,

Don't feel bad. Considering everything you're not in a bad situation. As you can read from my thread about purchase of 400DB (the link is on our 420/44DB Thread), it took me a lot longer and close to $6K before I finally said enough is enough. In the end, I'm VERY happy that it turned out the way it did, despite the fact that I've spent about $100K more than originally planned.

This is a BIG purchase and starting off with a surprise you've discovered is not what would make a lot of people comfortable. You've learned a lot in a short time frame and got out of the deal before spending great deal of money. Take is as another learning experience during the process and move on to find your future boat.

Good luck.

This isn't about Tiara vs SeaRay (at least for me anyway) but it is about helping a fellow boater in purchasing a boat, any boat, without getting screwed. At least Scott was able to get the paperwork and determine that there was a problem at one time and the root of the problem has probably not been repaired and it may show again since the other engine was not touched. I also talked to Frank W when I purchased my boat in PM's and emails and he helped me out a lot with explaining the difference in gas vs diesel. I just want to share my experiences over the last 3 years of learning about diesel cummins engines maintenance, problems and a lot of manufactures incorrect design and installation with anyone that wants to learn. There are a lot of boats out there, you can be picky and get one that has a better record.

Don't hesitate to PM or email if I can be of further assistance.

The engine started have fuel pump problems at 160hrs, it went through 3 of them. At 470hrs he developed a valve problem. At what hrs did each fuel pump fail? Depending on timing relative to the valve problem isn't it possible that fuel delivery contributed to the valve problem via overloading/heat? If so, this problem would be easier to accept than a bad batch of engines because it would eliminate the concerns for the other engine.

I don't know if it did, but it would be interesting to see job orders/dates on each fuel pump failure. I asked the question because of this
There is one thing in the records of one of the engines that I have a question about (I plan to post this in the Diesel forum too). When the port engine was a year old (160 hours) it started stalling and vibrating after running for 45 mins or so. It burned up 3 fuel pumps over a couple of months before Cummins figured out that the oil flow into the fuel pump was restricted by some thread shavings. Since that was fixed the motors have logged 450 more hours on them without any indication that there are issues. Would this issue from 2006 be of any long-term concern?

Thanks,

Scott
. It just seems there might be more to this than having two separate problems

Broken valves happened because of an overloaded engine, not a fuel pump. Fuel pumps cannot overload the engine. The problem with breaking valves on a 480CE is well documented on many boat on boatdiesel, most all the diagnosis was overloaded due to running manufacturers prop and not having the boat repropped.

Not only do I not feel bad, I feel thankful that I probably avoided a $20K+ issue and a major frustration.

Looks like to find my 420/44 DB I'm going to have to expand my search outside of the great lakes - there just are not many of them around here.

Many thanks guys.

Scott

Remember when I said that I'm not buying their story and someone is not telling you something? I'm glad you listened and made an effort to dig deeper and found the real answer to the puzzle.

Have fun searching.

We'll I found a 44 DB located in KY. This one is a 2006. After talking to rusty and Alex I ended up putting in an offer and getting a signed contract.

Now the fun begins. I have 3 weeks to do surveys and sea trial. Does anyone have a good surveyor in the Nashville area? Looking for both a hull survey and a diesel survey.

Here is the boat:

Anyone know this boat or owner?

Way 2 go Scott!

Yeah, this is a much better value. A year newer, upgraded motors, E series display, all fresh water, same price.

Only downside so far is the pewter hull. Wife loves the look, but I've read all the negatives on the additional care and the issues that arise in matching if a scratch occurs. I'm prepared to accept that.

That is a beautiful boat! I hope survey goes as well as she looks!
