420 DA Thread

You may want to look at Lifeseal for this. I just "recaulked" my entire boat (windshields, hull to deck, cap, etc.) and had a friend in the chemical adhesive biz break down the specs on all 3M products and some other caulking/sealant products for marine and he said the UV and elasticity, temperature range, and a lot of other tech reasons of Lifeseal far exceeded all others. 15 year+ life in direct sunlight according to the milspec. They have huge military contracts and have depth in this area. I'm happy with results but time will tell all.
Good info. thanks for posting. Just wondering if Sikaflex was one of the "other caulking/sealant products" that your friend looked into as that is what I believe Sea Ray is using now. Thanks

I don’t know if he considered that. He is out of the country on biz for 3 weeks but I’ll try to find out.

Thanks. Very interested in what to use on my next project/boat.
Full cure at about 50 F was 36 hrs.

Just a heads up guys. Life Seal and Life Caulk are amazing. They are in the same packaging. I was wondering the difference and if I remember correctly one should not be used with plastics. Just a heads up so you get the right one for the job.

I used Life Seal.

Who knows how to remove the wooden top step on a 420? Mine cracked and I can’t find an easy access point. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks86D367AC-D5A3-4A6F-BC77-E67E1CE04C98.jpeg

Regarding water leak in the aft locker, my boat's previous owner had the problem and it turned out to be the fresh water manifold itself. The yard replaced the whole thing. I have the receipt somewhere, but the whacked him pretty good. sounds like you are homing in on the vent hose - really wish there was better access to that fresh water tank, like an inspection port. Looks like we'd have to cut up some of the seat structure just to get to it.

Yes, my fresh water manifold had a leak last summer. Water will wind up in the aft floor hatch when that happens! The manifold itself is cheap and easy to replace yourself! If you reach down into the compartment where the fresh water manifold is screwed in to the wall, feel the floor with your hand. If it's wet you too have a leaky manifold. This water seeps into the aft floor hatch.

I have Ni-bral four blade 22" x 25" with a "L" cup. Top end I run 2,700rpm at 34mph

Bluone Thanks looks like your props are 2 inch less pitch. My guess is I will have to come down 1 inch to achieve the required rpm.

I think you'll find that different boats will end up with different pitches/cup based on how the boat is loaded with personal gear and bottom condition.

What fuel burn or load were you running at WOT? During the test how loaded were you (fuel, water people, gear) versus what you will normally cruise with? You could be fine with 1" if the boat had nearly full fuel and water and you had 6 people on board when you'll normally have two. On the other hand you may want to go down 1.5" or 2" if you were light on everything.

During sea trial we had 4 persons full water and 160 Gal. of fuel.Plus owners personal stuff.Top speed hit 28.9 Kt Fuel burn not listed on survey.

Yes it will be two full days we are laying over in Marathon and be home Sunday afternoon.I have hired a captain to be with me for the trip.

Where did you buy the manifold? Do you have a part number?
