420 DA Thread

So my cockpit fridge is shot and the cabin freezer is creating about 50 degrees. They are 13 years old so time to replace. I have read as much as I can in the threads regarding same and I now need to ask a few Q's.
Cabin Freezer:
It seems the replacement for the cabin freezer is a Dometic CRX 50. West is $939 and I found this (same description) for $495. https://www.raneystruckparts.com/tr...-refrigerator-with-freezer-crx-50-by-dometic/

Does anyone have any idea what the difference may be? Specs read the same. For $over 400 difference I need to ask.

Cockpit fridge:
Seems like the consensus is to go with a Isotherm Cruise 49. Only one I can find is at West for $729. I would truly appreciate any other less expensive solutions. I have to think there is a good replacement here. Just a fridge in this spot since I do not need freezer capability in the cockpit. Thanks in advance!

Hynespa - Sorry, what I meant regarding the shower light fixture was does it remove from the ceiling in the same manner as the other fixtures did? Basically, just pull down and watch for the spring loaded clips?

I replaced my thruster blades in 2016 after I got a stick in the blades.....I keep it on a lift and as it was settling into the water I did not notice the stick float in there.....I think you may be dealing with a battery issue, it is most likely a coincidence you think it is the propeller. The bow thruster is the only thing on the 420 that is 24 volt....the batteries are located just under the steps to the bilge. There are 7 batteries on these boats (diesel anyway) and they are all identical. The bow thruster batteries are two 12V batteries wired in series to get 24V. You can easily test the batteries for voltage and a load test would be the best to determine if they are good.

Behind your electrical panel. Couple of screwed and it'll swing wide open

Hey cop... Did you have to remove the electrical panel door as my panel will not "swing open" as it is hitting the door hinges??
thanks
chris

Thank you very much I will check it - thanks

Hmmmm....it's been a while and I'm trying to recall but my gut says no, I didn't remove the door. I'll put a reminder in my phone and check when I'm there this weekend (hopefully).

kysearay....+1 on everything ASH said. The charger for the bow thruster is kinda behind the couch, but you can see it from the "hole" below the Salon Breaker Cabinet. Check your voltages on the thruster batteries. My boat had a bad thruster battery charger which was completely missed my the surveyor (and me). It lasted several weeks. If you need a new charger, the ProMariner ProNautic 2420 (24 volt/20 amp) is an excellent choice.

Thank you very much, i am pretty sure that i am getting a charge as i am able to use the thruster, it just doesnt seem to have the same "thrust" now that i have changed the prop from 3 blade to the updated 5/6 blade - i cant remember exactly the new number of blades. I will check the output of the charger and again I am assuming that its the oem charger so 13 years old- maybe not the same output voltage wise so maybe the batteries are not getting a full charge and therefore dont have the thrust power - of course I am just ASSuming!
Thanks alot

Thank you very much, i really dont want to remove the hinges to open the panel....
thanks

I think the door will have to come off if lowering the whole panel, but not if just swinging the AC and/or DC sections down.

Copy that, out of curiosity, what are your blue tape markings for? I have thought about doing something similar for quick reference for my "crew"

Hey @kysearay there is one screw per hinge that has to be loosened and the electrical panel glass door will come right off. As you loosen the screw on the last hinge make sure you are holding the door with the other hand so that it doesn’t fall.

When you are all done and putting the door back on, it’s a little bit tricky to get all three hinges lined up again so that you can retighten the screws but I mastered it after my first time removing and replacing the door.

With the door removed when you loosen the two screws at the very top the panel will now swing down. The first time I did it I had to apply some force to get the panel to start swinging down as mine was stuck a little bit. There is a strap within the panel that will keep it from falling down too far.

Now that I have done it several times for my various projects, I can get the door off and panel swung open in less than 90 seconds (with an electric screwdriver).

You really need to load test the batteries, its a huge draw and a bad cell in the battery will cause performance issues, a couple of bad cells will make it not run at all.

Just that. They are what I want turned ON/OFF as we come to or leave the boat. I made up a laminated guide as well which I'll post when I can find the soft copy.

Edit: Here's what I made up for the crew.

I was planning the same thing, just haven't gotten around to it!

Curious why you leave the batteries on when not there? There are several items that are wired directly to batteries (before the on/off solenoids) including bilge pumps, memory for radio, engine ECU (memory).

Also, if you have a Bow Thruster the charger should be on all the time, you show it as always off.

I had the same opinion when we first got the boat, and I used to turn the batteries off every time we left the boat. But I didn't see much value to turning them off, actually.

For the bow thruster batteries - they are rarely used except for when we go out. Since I'm not discharging them, why stress them by constantly charging them? I had a hunch it wasn't great for the batteries even though it was my practice to keep it on 24/7, and recently replaced them (from what I believe was excessive charging) from a not-so-smart charger. Again, seemed to be little risk to keep the charger off.

I also used to turn off most of the systems (e.g. microwave, galley systems, stereo, lighting, etc) when I would leave , but have evolved into the system you see above. I'm sure it's not perfect, and I'm sure it will change. Case in point, I always keep the DC Fridge/Freezer breaker on now, since our dock loses power frequently.

Always open to suggestions, though!

Thats a great idea, thank you very much for sharing that - what program did you use to create it?

I use PowerPoint for almost everything. If I need, I'll go to Viseo or Gimp. But for the most part, I can get everything done quickly in PPT.

If anyone wants it, just PM me your email. Fonts won't work unless you have the specific fonts I used on your machine, but all the text will be there.
