420 DA Thread

No cutting of the back of the couch required. She slides on in. Some spinning and rotating but she fits . Make sure u cap the condenser inlet and outlet on the old unit . U don't want to be spilling seawater all over. U can also blow the lines out too which is what we did.

Sorry, I had these numbers somewhere but can't locate them at the moment. I'll keep looking. hopefully didn't lose them when I upgrade phones.

My anchor light is not working. I also have a stern light that sits under the satellite and that doesn't turn on either.

I'm hoping and guessing it is just the bulbs, I'm starting there since it's the easiest and cheapest to try... anyone have a suggestion for replacement or just go with the standard stuff?

Thought I'd share...

The boat came with a hideous vinyl-like cover that was supposed to serve as a carpet runner in the salon. The other factory ones are there. It was so bad, we had to get rid of it. BUT! I wanted something down that would protect the carpet. Seems silly to have carpet over carpet, but oh well.

Went to Wayfair and got us a rug, made a paper template of the salon, overlaid the two and started cutting. It's only been down a week, but the edges seem to be holding up nicely and once I got it snapped down it doesn't move much at all. I think it adds a little character to the inside. I'll do the rest of the downstairs soon, but for now - success!

I like it.

Any I can't agree more about the sunbrella carpet runner. Even after dry cleaning mine it looks poor and I'm looking for a replacement.

I have a 2004 420 with Cummins 6CTA 8.3 Diesels with V Drives. I changed my Port engine serpentine belt over the weekend because it was throwing a lot of black dust which was collecting dust on the front of the engine, just inboard of the belt cover. After removing the cover, I see a lot of red dust around the belt tensioner.

I installed the new belt, and ran the engine for 30 minutes, and all ran well.

There didn't appear to be any noise or roughness in the tensioner bearing when I had the belt off, but I would need to double check that to be completely sure.

So is this red dust indicative of a tensioner going bad? Either the bearing or the spring?

I appreciate any information and guidance.

There is a procedure in the Cummins shop manual for checking the tensioner. I don't remember the exact steps to recite here but it is something to check on.

Bought new belt tensioners....$103 each. Gonna replace the one with the red dust and monitor.

I had tons of dust but mine was black. Cleaned it as best I could after replacing belt. Keeping an eye on it.

My 420 had the same thing and my Cummins belts looked near perfect. I am convinced the backing of the carpet was sifting down through the cracks of the engine compartment and the alternator was sucking just enough air to deposit the dust in that area. I replaced my carpet and dust disappeared. I can not explain the red dust.

My aft canvas is getting replaced this winter. We have gone back and forth on a camper or stay with original design. We have decided to keep the original slant back. Just wondering if anyone has made improvements to the original design that they are happy with.....Things like side windows or screens... Flaps over the aft door.. Stuff like that?

Blue one, we have the camper canvas and we love it, with the isinglass it is warm in winter, and then we have screens in the summer. Steve

Steve ....My wife said if I want to keep doing this boating thing with her then I have to get a bigger boat... So I am just looking to replace the tired looking slant back. I would have done a camper without question if we were planning on keeping it.

Steve, do you have any pictures, we are considering doing the same. Thanks
chris

Hello everyone. After a long "between boats" spell, we took delivery of our '06 440 this week. We bounced between several models and years and actually walked away from a different model 2 hours into an engine survey.
A little nudging from the Mrs (who liked the 420/440 ) and a lot of trolling on this thread made up our minds and we zeroed in on the 420/440. The search took months and the fondness you guys show throughout this thread for the 420/440 was inspirational.
The maiden voyage was a 3 hour run from Long Island to Manasquan in 3-4 ft seas. She handled like a champ and we are thrilled with our choice.
We're hoping to get a few good days in before we winter it, seems crazy that we took delivery only to winter it but this was THE boat. From the initial offer then a little negotiation then scheduling Cummins to do the engine survey and then getting a SAMS surveyor scheduled and then documentation and finally closing...it all took about 6 weeks! The surveyors we chose were a good investment and we learned a ton from them.
Anyway, as we become more familiar with our "new" acquisition, I look forward to tapping into the knowledge and experience you guys have and looking forward to the opportunity to contribute as well.
