420 DA Thread

New member. Just bought a 2003, 420 DA. My refrigerator will only operator on DC. Any suggestion on how to get it to work on AC. ? (It is plugged in, but has no power and the switch is on). Thanks

Does the outlet the fridge is plugged into have power? If not check for an outlet with a GFCI reset button in the galley, mine is in cabinet just forward of the sink.

If the outlet work does the power supply for the fridge is likely bad. Most dual voltage fridges (12v or 120v) only need 12v to run. There is usually a power supply that will convert 120v to 12v if 120v is available.

The exact power supply may no longer be available but you should be able to find a suitable replacement that has the amperage specs as the old one. try calling the fridge manufacturer for a part number.

Hi, Thanks for the help. Outlet has power. Will look into the converter.

I too had a junction behind the salon sofa. I replaced that hose all the way to the stateroom head as it was starting to smell. I ran a new hose all the way back which required removing the sofa. This allowed for repair of the pull out which had lost most of its screws and was just sitting there. I did remove the junction and ran one piece of hose to the tank. I didn't like a seam in the salon. 6-8 hours for the total job. The worst part are the bulk heads which have a lot of silicone sealer around the old hose.

I "discovered" a new hatch yesterday. I pulled up the carpet runners to clean them. I figured it was a good time to check all the hatches in the cabin floor. Starting at the Forward Stateroom, where the bow thruster is located back to the grey water sump, all are OK. Then I pulled up the runner in the aft cabin area, and what do you know....another hatch! Small, about 1 foot square.

I pop the lid, and whoa! Full of water. Stinky water. Bailed by hand and cleaned to get the odor out.

Here is my question: I didn't see anything in that hatch area. No pumps, no nothing. Where is the water coming from? I don't even think that one or any of the more forward hatch areas can "drain" into it. Because if it did, there would be water in both places.

The only thing I can think of is Freshwater tank? Any other possibilities?

Thanks in advance.

I had the same circumstances when we first purchased the boat. The survey didn't catch it. I cleaned it out and have never had a problem since and that's been over a year ago.

I store all the central vac hoses and attachments down there in a basket.

I too would be interested if someone figured out the cause.

Me 3! I drained/cleaned the smelly water in the same compartment before we launched last year and its still dry as a bone 1 year later.

I wonder if its leakage from the fresh tank or a pressure relief of some sort. We rarely fill our water tank to the brim unless we know we will be on a mooring/anchor for over three days, and even then we fill right before we toss lines and its lower by the end of day 1.

Could it be your shower sump is was clogged or the float switch got stuck and water seeped out of the lid seal into that area?

Possible, but we haven't used either shower since purchasing the boat. I cleaned the sump out last fall and the float was functioning. I know the sump also handles the condensate from the AC, so there could be a "continual" source of water. But then that would mean that the sump pump is not functioning, and I know that mine is. Hmmmm.....

When cleaning the newly found hatch in the aft cabin, I didn't see any "chases" or channels for water to flow through from one chamber to the next. (I hope that I'm explaining this correctly. There is a word for these channels, but I can't remember it). I didn't see any on the bottom of the compartment. The floor in the aft cabin area is recessed or sunken one step. I wonder if there is a way for water to pass from the shower sump area into this area from the top? Think of it as two lock sections, and the top one is draining from the bottom and the lower section is filling from the top. I'll have to get a mirror to see up under there. I'll let you know.

Thanks.

Theere is a water manifold in the cabinet next to the TV on the port side. Maybe one of the hoses connected to it is leaking. If it was the water would probably drain down into that mid cabin hatch in the floor. It would have to be an intermittent leak, for example, it only leaks when the faucet it is connected to is being used. Otherwise the water pump would run all the time.

Not sure about your year but on my antique 420 (1990) the water heater pressure relief valve has a hose on it that leads to the mid cabin bilge compartment. If it develops a high pressure or overheat condition it could release a little water then stop. Mine has done this. Just a thought.

Question on amp location. Just took delivery on my 2004 420 da. The stereo worked during survey. It's dead now. Power to head unit above main panel. Found one amp behind salon sofa. Where the heck is the other amp? Some stated both amps need to power up for main unit to go on. Either unit powers up. Remote on dash or main unit. Btw, this system was recently upgraded to kenwood. Driving me nuts. Wasn't planning a new system

When I got my 2004 420DA, it only had the one Clarion amp behind the saloon sofa.
I ended up replacing it with 2 JL Audio amps an a Fusion amp to go along with the Fusion 700AV system with 3 remotes and a slew of JL Audio speakers including 8.8s on the transom.
Sounds much better now!

Jay, probably not from your 100gl freshwater tank.....believe that's in the engine room area. Could be leaks from your water system. Does your water pump run continuously (to maintain water pressure)?
Still, I would check AC drains.

Thanks for all of the responses. When we went to the boat this weekend, I checked the newly found hatch in the aft cabin and it was bone dry. Of course, no one had been there in a few days AND my custom when leaving the boat is to turn off the Freshwater Pump (which is brand new by the way). Upon leaving the boat yesterday afternoon, I DID NOT re-check the hatch for dryness. After reading some comments about the freshwater manifold, that will be my next item to check. Since the Freshwater pump was on from Saturday evening to Sunday afternoon, and we used water for Heads and sinks (no showers), if that is the source, then the hatch should have a bit of water in it. I may have an opportunity to get back to the boat on Wednesday. I'll report back.

Thanks for all of the responses.

I was going over the salon and cabin lighting today looking to replace it with LED. The valance lighting under the forward cabin bed was never that bright so I took it apart to see what is going on and it looks a little tired. The same rope lighting is in the over head Fluorescent fixture that illuminates when you have the step switch on. I want to replace both.... Has anyone done this and can you share what you did?.... Or share if you have a good solution

Thanks

The freshwater tank is between the port and starboard fuel tanks forward of the engine room bulkhead. That puts it under the aft cabin seating and very close to the area that collected water.

fhauk....went to the boat yesterday to do some work. Checked the small hatch in the aft cabin and there was a cup or two of water in it. Had a slight tinge color to it, but it definitely was NOT anything from the blackwater system! I vacuumed that out and will continue watching. My AC was running yesterday and I didn't see any evidence of the AC drip pan overflowing. I think my hose from the drip pan to the gray water sump is not clogged. It may be kinked.......bottom line, I'm still looking.

Now, I'm happy to report, that I completed my first "I just want to do it" project. I replaced all of the cockpit lights (originally Perkos) with LEDs. I am very pleased with the install. All the color switching works just as advertised and anticipated. Pictures are worth a thousand words.....

Hi,
Need some help. When I start my Port engine Cummins 8.3 the volt meter jumps back and forth from 12-14 volts every 15-30 seconds, the engine rpm gauge also goes crazy with the rpm readings. A guy suggested unplugging the air preheater on the engine, I disconnected the two red cables to heater, now everything works great. Is it ok to run like this or what might need replaced? Now the Starboard engine gauge has started to do the same thing? Thanks

Can you share what you bought for LED's and the controller for the color change ?
