420 DA Thread

Has anyone replaced their engine hatch lift accuators? Where'd you get them, how much $$$$$?
@Woody - did you ever end up replacing your engine hatch actuators? If so, where did you buy the replacement and how much did they cost?

I’m headed to look at a 2004 420 wednesday. Any specific areas to stick my head into? I always check the usual stuff - cabin hatches, water in bilge, overall cleanliness. The boat does have the hydraulic platform which would be new to us.

Its all about the engines.... the Mechanicals are incredible....if they are solid you are good to go ....the rest is easy

Pay a reputable and experienced Surveyor with strong references concerning diesels to provide a report. The cost will a fraction of just one issue 'overlooked'.

Strecker - Is it just a visual looksy you are doing or you getting a chance to test systems and electronics??

It’s a brokered boat and they know I’m a serious buyer so I can tinker with whatever I see fit, but it is a pre-offer visit so I wouldn’t expect to take it out and thrash around. I usually power up electronics, start engines to just check for leaks and smoke, start generator, etc.

I have a very good surveyor very familiar with all things sea ray locally who will do the hull and systems portion, and I’ll commission Cummins to do the engine survey

Autopilot question: If I wanted to switch out the Raymarine Autopilot that came on my 2004 420 with a new Garmin system (https://www.boemarine.com/garmin-reactor-40-hydraulic-autopilot.html) could/should I "reuse" the pump that currently drives the rudders when in autopilot? And since we're talking about that pump, where the heck is it? My guess it is somewhere on the starboard side forward of the holding tank maybe? I know where my Trim Tab pump & fluid resevoir is. Am I close? Also, is this a DIY winter project?

There will be more questions on this topic going forward.

Thanks,

Jaybeaux

Why change it out?... I still have my original working with newer ray marine hardware?.... just curious... I get it if you’re just trying to hide money:)

I put the Garmin system in on my 99 380 when I bought the boat 4 years ago. I have a Garmin GPSMAP 6212 and the upgraded software that draws routes and it all interfaces together. I had my electronics professional do the install. Seeing what they did, I'm not sure I would call it DYI, but Garmin has some great videos.

Hide money? Whatever do you mean? (Insert Angel emoji here)

I've already gutted the GPS RN300. It sometimes would, but sometimes not get a GPS fix. Most importantly, by removing the RN300, it freed up real estate at the helm for me to mount a really sexy Garmin 8612xsv Chart Plotter. Currently, what's left of the original system will hold a heading, but I'm looking to get full auto back since I now have the aforementioned sexy chart plotter.

So do you know where that pump is? I'm headed to the boat on Saturday.

Electronics fella is putting an 8612 (non-xsv) in mine as we speak, along with a few other helm toys. I was also thinking about radar and autopilot in the future. Mine did not have autopilot previously installed, wonder which Garmin kit I'd need... you know, in case I was hiding some money... :D

Did you two figure this out?.... I have posted the source a million times.... okay a couple thousand times :)

@Jason_Peters Since you do not have an Auto-Pilot now, you will need the system with the Pump.

Emily will steer you in the right direction...

Do you have to buy the display, or could he use the MFD to display and control the auto pilot? I think he could just purchase the pump and computer, etc, right?
On the other hand, it’s only 650$, and after 4K, plus install, might as well do it right?

To answer you first question, no. You can control it from the MFD. However, then I have a 3 1/2 inch hole in my helm where the old Raymarine control unit was. I know of a $650 filler!

I never did replace mine. I thought I had heard a funny noise when lifting the hatch and of course after that I thought it was working harder to lift and even slower. A little investigating and I decided there was nothing wrong to start with.

Can anyone tell me what these do? Also looking at these intakes and rusty mounts and genny it appears to me that the boat may have spent time in saltwater . The broker is saying it’s 100% freshwater . So on diesel, do they get rusty in fresh or salt ? And can the water intakes get green corrosion in fresh water View attachment 89863 View attachment 89864 View attachment 89865 View attachment 89866 View attachment 89867

The picture of the ground connections on the side of the motors looks normal to me. The brown staining around the connections is an anti-corrosion spray that is applied at the factory.
The rest of the pictures look a little salty but honestly to me everything is so dirty, that it’s hard to tell from the pictures.
There is a dealer at that end of the lake that does bring in some boats from other stores located on the coast and sells them here. I’ve seen several that make their way here.
As always, it’s caveat emptor.

Thanks for the reply , my Surveyer did a search , and it’s alway been up her lake Erie fresh water , he says
Doesn't look salty to me. The spots of corrosion could be something like clorine bleach residue, or caustic battery material. The brown on the wiring is not corrosion, it's Soft Seal.
He also surveyed the boat for the second owner when purchased ,
WHAT'RE THOSE VALVES , IN THE FIRST PICTURE , Is there anything I need to know or look for and this particular model I’m considering a purchase.
