420/44 DB Owners Club

Can you guys share some of the parts sources you use for your 420/44s?

I'm trying to find good sources for:
-mains/generator oil and filters
-transmission oils
-impellers
-racors

Which engine oils do you guys prefer to use in your rigs? I found few links where some folks use 15W-40 Rotella T and some stay with Cummins Premium Blue. What about Onan genny?

So far I got good links for racors and impellers (MarineFilters.com and http://www.adiesel.com/sherwood-impellers.html)

In my neck of the woods, there is a retail store called Boat Owner's Warehouse. They sell all the items you listed at good prices. For my 3116's, I always use Rotella straight 30W (being in a warm climate) but every engine has it's "right" oil. MY genny uses the R 30 also.

Does anyone have an idea where I can get (besides ordering from MM) Cockpit Bench Seating with starage below? According to Sea Ray parts manual it's item 22 (on page 19) part# 743625 and 800888.

I tried Flounder Pounder and no luck there.........

Can anyone give me cruise and WOT specs on the 44DB with QSC-500's? I have a sea trial coming up and am trying to get real data as opposed to Boat Test Data.

Cruise RPM, speed, and FF.
WOT RPM, speed, and FF.
Heavy boat (Full Fuel, Water, and 3 adults) and, light weight data if you have it, just in case.
Anything I need to look out for specifically in a 44DB?

John,

While you're waiting for folks with similar rig to respond, I would ask SR to send you prop and fuel specs sheet. It'll have very usefull data. However, I've learned that it's not 100% accurate and should only be used as a basic reference. As for the boattest numbers, they're not too far off and I would use it as a guide as to perform basic sea trial.

As you know, all the numbers you'll see would be taken based on light load and good test conditions (mild to no wind and close to flat seas). So, if the boat you're about to test has full tanks, water and other gear your numbers will be different and of course the wind/seas condition will play the big role.

If you don't hear anything, try PM bmac (Brian), he's got the same rig.

Good luck,
Alex.

Try sending a PM to RiverGalsMan. He doesn't use his... it's probably like new.

Here's what I get. Your results may vary.

Cruise: 2400RPM 75-77% Load. 25-26 Knots 38-40 GPH
The fuel consumption and speed and pretty linear once up on plane. We choose this speed because she runs flatter.

WOT: The rating is 2600. I can get mine to 2,680. This will get the load factor up into the mid 90s. You should see 29 knots and 50GPH at WOT.

What to look for: A list to starboard. Leaky plumbing fittings. That's all I can think of that is model-specific.

Thanks again. Leaving Costa Rica for Atl, then up North to look at a boat.

Does anyone have kvh satellite on a 2004 420? Wondering about the mounting as there isn't much of an arch up top on this model year.

My numbers aren't quite as good as those of Festivus. I cruise at 2350 rpm and get 24-25 mph but burn 32-34 gph. I agree, fuel consumption, on a mpg basis, is pretty flat from about 1800 - 2500 rpm. Mine will also run up to 2680 rpm and I see 34 -36 mph at WOT, not sure of the fuel burn. I'd also agree with the model specific issues, that starboard list is annoying, but can be trimmed out with fuel loading. I'd also have them pull the engine zincs on the port aftercooler, they're the hardest to reach.

I have it on my '06. I'd bet the aluminum bridge frame is the same on both boats. The system was installed by CMI in Lindenhurst, NY. PM me if you want their contact info. It looks like they use a short flat mount that is secured to the center beam of the frame. They've done a ton of these installations for Marine Max. It looks like it came from the factory and has served me well so far.

My 420DB has a set of ZF280-1As. It uses SEA-30 oil. I know that some people prefer different brands like Premium Blue or Shell Rotella T (High-quality SAE 15W-40 multiviscosity heavy duty) for motors. What do you guys use for your transmissions? Are you using the same brand as for the motor oil?

I just picked up Rotella T1 30 weight for the tranny, from what I was told this replaces the T30. For the engines I use Rotella T 15W-40.

Thanks Jon.

Where do you get it: Walmart, AutoZone, Pep Boys?

I see that 5 gal doesn't seem like being offered at much of a discount, so may be it's worth of getting just 1gal cans for ease of use?

Tractor Supply is a good place to get the 5 gallon barrels. There isn't much of a price break, but I find it easier to pour (I hand pour rather than using the reverso to fill) and as long as you keep an empty barrel each time you do an oil change it's much easier to drain the engine oil all at once into a 5 gallon container. This is worth the price of lifting the extra weight to me.

Thanks Jon.

I ordered online from West Marine and picked it up in the store, 1 gallon containers.

Wait to see what others have to say before ordering.

Once a year I go to Walmart and it's to buy oil for the boat. Walmart has been by far the cheapest around. I use the Shell Rotella 15W-40 for the mains and 30W for the trannys. I've worked in power plants and on ships and they all used Rotella, including for some apllications up to straight 90W.

Oh....also, I've always used the one gallon containers but I can see how the 5 might make more sense, especially when draining the oil. I invariably spill some on the one gallon containers when transferring the old oil from the 2 1/2 gallon container Sea Ray supplies.

Thanks Brian. Sounds like it's time for shopping at Walmart.

I don't have a manual for the genny and the label doesn't seem to show the type of oil it uses. Can you guys tell me what oil you use for the genny?
