Has anyone ventured to replace the sound shield insulation on their genny? The foam on my onan is disintegrating and creating quite the mess. Curious if there are any good diy products out there, or kits that onan sells?

I did this on the Onan on our ‘07 44DB. The OEM insulation was quickly turning to very fine black dust. I removed the sound shield panels and took them home, cleaned them up and painted the few rusty spots and even waxed them. I found some foil faced rockwool insulation panels on eBay. I think they were about 2’x3’. I cut them to fit and used 3M aerosol contact cement to glue them in and worked perfect. The hardest part was removing the glue used on the original insulation. Acetone finally did the trick.

Our bow thruster batteries are 24 volt. Does anyone know if they are dual purpose, starting or deep cycle? Not sure what we have would like to grab a pair on the way to the boat as I think mine are shot.I already know the are lead acid.

In addition to the bow thrusters mine also connected to a 3k inverter - so the batteries are deep cycle. If just the bow thruster was on the batteries you could go with starter batteries (with high CCA). They will support high amp draw for short periods (much like starting the engine).

From Amazon:
Gazeer 6 Pcs 100N/22.5lb Gas Strut Lift Support Cabinet Door Lift Pneumatic Support

Force:100N/22.5lb (Per Strut);Length:10.5 inch,Package included: 6 X 100N Gas Struts and 30 X Screw
This goes back to mid-April - I ordered these and went to install today. The instructions on the package show to mount the cabinet ball 255mm (10") below the top of the cabinet ... my cabinets are only 8" high! Am I mis-reading the instructions or maybe your cabinets are higher than mine?

I mounted the end of the strut about an inch up on the door from the hinge.

Then I just positioned the other end, with the round 3 screw plate, low down on the side wall and such that the strut pushes up the door to the top of it's travel.

Tom,tell me about this inverter setup. Have thought of this as well to serve the tv console in the salon.

Ire,
I also installed a 2000 watt inverter behind the TV. It only supplies power for the TV and blue ray player. Just so on a quiet night on the hook no generator needed. It’s 24 volt off bow thruster batteries.

Exactly what I need.

When I purchased the boat the inverter/charger was already installed ... I think it is original OEM. It is an Xantrex inverter/charger 200a output and wired to the AC panel. All circuits are available with the exception of stove, water heater and air conditioner. Really, it boils down that we get all piug circuits and the microwave. We do use it when anchoring if we need the microwave, coffee maker, TV and/or charging the electronics. I don't believe it is a cheap project but if you go down the path of a smaller inverter for a plug, maybe it makes sense to wire it to the panel for that circuit. Then you would get all plugs on that circuit.

I installed solar last summer and find that it can more than offset our daily usage. Significant upgrade in the quality of batteries this spring (I have 3 Groupl31 128ah ea on the house circuit) and may add a DC-DC converter so the solar can top up the bow thruster batteries so we can use the inverter more if we want to. Then I think we're pretty good for extended stays at anchor.

Bennett, were you going to post a picture?

I don’t have any pics from the 44 and have not installed on the 420 yet. On the list and have them, but not installed yet. Maybe Bruce can post one. Sounds like he got them done.

no worries. When you said 'Like this', I thought there was a maybe a pic you were going to post.

I'm headed to boat in a few and will take some pics!

Here are some pics of the glass wind screen. So sorry again for the rotated images...I am on a few forums and this is the first time I have had this issue:

Ire,
Sorry ,correction
I used Giandel 24 VDC to 120 VAC 1200 watt pure sign wave inverter.
Amazon $ 209.96
Amp draw on TV and blue ray are less than 10 amp Dc
@Mark.60 do you swap between the inverter and the boats 110 when on shore or gen or do you keep the inverter running at all time when the tv is on?
