420/44 DB Owners Club

Re: 420 DB Owners Club

Thanks Joe.

Let me tell you that our "little" 320 was a "ship" and a "luxury condo" for us for 4 years and it'll stay in our hearts for the rest of our lives. The trips we had and new firends we've met was just priceless experience.

.... One suggestion on the thread title...420/44DB Owners Club would be more appropos...Sea Ray made the 420 for 2 years and the 44 for the following 6, but other than the electronic vs. mechanical engines and specific options, they're all pretty much the same boat.....

Brian,

Great point and I totally agree. I didn't feel at liberty to join these models, but I think that 420 and 44 model owners will only benefit if we'll keep all info on these models together.

If you guys don't mind, then we'll need to ask CSR_ADMIN to modify the title to "420/44 DB Owners Club", b/c as far as I recall regular users can't change the titles.

Re: 420 DB Owners Club

Congrats on the new boat and thanks for starting this thread! We 420/44 owners need our place too...

We had a 35 ft express for five years before buying the 420.

We really started thinking about bridge boats two years ago when our daughters wanted to be able to bring friends out for the weekend. Plus we wanted to have some refuge from the late afternoon sun during the hot months.

It all came to be a possibility when a friend of ours wanted our 35 footer - and was willing to pay a reasonable price for it. His initial offer was $4K lower than I really wanted and it took us bout 10 seconds to decide to split the difference.

We looked at several Sea Ray bridges (480 DB, 450 EB, 48 MY) and a few Carvers. The admiral instantly preferred the modern, contemporary interior (at least compared to the others) of the 420. Plus there was one in our marina for-sale-by-owner with all the options we wanted, none of the ones we didn't - and only 115 hrs on the engines. One owner, all freshwater, plus he really wanted to sell it.

We finally put the deal together late in the summer and haven't looked back since...

Great boat so far. I'm still learning all its systems and maintenance procedures. Plus there is a little customization we are looking forward to in the Spring...

And yes, I've probably owned my last gasoline boat. I have always been a diesel fan but I couldn't have imagined how much difference there really is.

Re: 420 DB Owners Club

Congrats Alex....your new ride looks great. Looking forward to getting the 'tour' on the bay this season.

I use Dover Oil for my fuel delivery. There are others in the area, but Dover generally has the best prices and their service over the last four seasons has been nothing less than perfect.

One curious question to you guys. I notice that Alex's 2005 model year has the 450C mechanical motors and that First Mates 2004 model year has the 480CE motors. Is that correct?

Re: 420 DB Owners Club

Congratulations! Have you named her yet? I just ordered sat tv yesterday.

Re: 420 DB Owners Club

Alex,
Congratulations!!!

I know this is the 420 DB Owners Club but I have the entire weekend to do nothing or anything I want, well within reason. My admiral and her son are going skiing in the Pocono's and I am staying here. So, I am like everyday on CSR.

I didn't realize in the other threads that the pic is of your new boat. So when I came here and saw the pics I knew I had to write. She is a beauty. I too like the interior and the teak flooring. Is it real teak or the new composite types? I am having my done this spring, by me, and if all goes well I will do the cabin as well.

Best of luck with her. Enjoy it every minute that you can, that is why we own them.

When you come this way towards or to the Chesapeake Bay let us know. I would love to see this boat.

Damn, I just got this 400EC and now I am looking for something bigger. Well, in my mind I am.

Good luck, think SPRING!!!!

Congrats on the new boat.

Dom,

Thanks for the info.

Yes, your understanding about the engines is correct. Here's from the specs:

STANDARD PROPULSION
T-Cummins MerCruiser® 6CTA 8.3M Diesel Inboards
(T-430 hp - 321 kW)

OPTIONAL PROPULSION
Twin Diesel Inboards:
T-Cummins MerCruiser 480 CE (T-446 hp - 333 kW)
SmartCraft™ Diagnostics:
- Instrumentation, Custom Sea Ray SmartCraft 4-in-
1 Multigauges (2) w/Low-Glare Blue Night Lighting
& Chrome Bezels (Includes: Fuel Level, Oil
Pressure, Voltmeter, Water Temperature)
- SmartCraft System View (Includes: Air & Water
Temperature, Combined Fuel Flow/Range, Depth,
Engine Alarms/Hourmeters, Engine Synchronizer,
GPS Interface, System Maintenance Records)

.....Have you named her yet?.....

Not yet. Name is something we're trying to come up with. It turned out to be harder than I thought despite all ideas I had.

Thanks! I would never use someone else boat in my sig.

It's a real teak floor. Now I have to find how to properly maintain it.

Re: 420 DB Owners Club

Completely agree on changing the name of this thread to 420/44DB... they are the same boat!

Along that line, here is my list of "cool mods" (can we still say that?):

- swap b.s. three strand anchor rode for 8 plait
- 316SS anchor
- 24v "auto switching" inverter, running off thruster battery bank, that powers the "Starboard Systems" breaker which gives me the TV, an outlet in the salon and master stateroom as well as the cockpit locker and flying bridge.
- modified salon A/C (I have a whole long post on that somewhere on this site)
- upgraded HVAC registers in staterooms to divert more flow to salon
- swapped cockpit speakers for component speakers with rear-aiming tweeters
- bridge a/c (this was a huge undertaking since I have three helm seats; low profile unit is mounted under the U-shaped seating)
- bridge upgraded to EZ2CY on all panels
- zip-in sun-shades for all panels on the bridge
- roll-up "pouches" for cockpit canvas (allows for simple, attractive handling of cockpit canvas when rolled up)
- Centek Gen Sep to virtually eliminate generator exhaust noise (the installation of which is another whole story). Gas comes out the factory, above-water line outet. Water comes out below water line at the transom.
- replaced all six batteries with Optima Blue Top AGMs
- Hurley dinghy davit, plus "Miss Michigan" 4:1 block and tackle retrieval system
- 12v fans in staterooms

I'm sure there are more... but this is all I can think of now.

Re: 420 DB Owners Club

Thanks for sharing your mods, Tim.

I'll ask ADMINs to change the title.

Re: 420 DB Owners Club

Hey Alex,

Is this under the stairs?

Re: 420 DB Owners Club

I don't think it's from 420 or 44DB. There's much more room between genny and the engines. I have water heater and reversa oil changer between them. So, I'll say there's about 2-3' (or more) of room, not like in this picture.

Re: 420 DB Owners Club

Hey Alex
Hadn't seen this thread til just now but you had gotten my congrats anyway. So...

CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN!!!! What a great find and a beautiful boat. Many years of happiness and safe travels.

Hey, do I get to drive her up and down the bay? At least once, right? ;-)

Re: 420 DB Owners Club

Does the 420DB have v-drives? Those look like V-drives but I could have my bearings all wrong (???)

No, straight drives.

Re: 420 DB Owners Club

OK, just noticed that in your boat info.

Can anyone confirm that the engines in the photo are v-drive? If so, they are not from a 420DB and the ad in yachtworld has the wrong ER pictured.
