Although you are burning a few extra gallons per hour, you are also going slightly faster. Without having a fuel flow meter on either of our vessels, I would guess that your MPG at cruise would be about the same.

I did do some MPG calcs on my long runs from NJ to BIH and back. Basically I am getting 1 SM per gallon.....almost dead on.

I don't know ... 3116s and 3126s always seem to be the most miselry with the diesel. Not quite as much oomph maybe in the bigger boats, but sure frugal with the oil ...

I can't offer too many specifics, but I can tell you that we just got back from an extended, (for us), cruise up to Philadelphia, coming back via Georgetown on the Sassafras River and then Rock Hall, back to Baltimore. We cruised around 2300 RPM and avg'd about 23 knts SOG via GPS. Fuel burn worked out to right around 20 GPH total.

We ran with less than 1/4 water most of the time, and the tanks were only full at the start of the trip but we tried to keep them about 1/3 to 2/3 full along the way.

We had 2 adults and 2 children on board, and we were totally overloaded with supplies. Both forward closets, the aft head and salon cabinets were stuffed with groceries.

I do not know our prop pitch. If our tachs are accurate, (big IF), we are only making 2700 RPM at WOT. Don't know why.

Reference adults, kids, groceries.....

This time of year bottom and prop condition is the biggest factor. Clean it and try again. With you boat fully loaded with gear, people, water and fuel you should still be able to hit your rated WOT.

Dom....just ordered digital tachs from Aetna...just a thought.. anyway that factory Sea Ray tach housings could be used to contain new digital tachs and still retain (somewhat) factory look?

Yes...I remember having that thought when I was doing the install. I didn't want to lose the original tachs and hours for the next owner. I went with the trim rings and they did turn out fine. I even asked the local MM if they had a pair of 'bad' tachs they were throwing away that I could bastardize, but they didn't.

Anyway, give it a try and post your results....maybe it would make for a good winter project.....

BTW...you will kiss and hug yourself after you finish the install. I love being able to dial in on my cruise RPMs without guessing which tach I should be paying attention to.....You just need to control your OCD a bit as it can get to be a bit much on long trips....

good luck...

Aetna tachs installed and you are right......nice to know what one's motors are actually reving...apparently my most reliable original tach(and lowest reading tach) was still reading around 200 RPM too low, therefore my cruising speed has dropped a little but better that than overloading engines....thanks for your help OSD9!

Tom:

I'm glad I could help and that it worked out for you. Post some pics!
