410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread**

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

Depends on the urgency and current. I normally cruise at about 2350 to 2400 (20 knots for me) but have dropped down to 2200 with a good push doing the same speed. Play with your tabs a bit when getting dialed in. The bow may be higher than you want but she wants to run up there, you will see with some trim adjustments. Start full tabs then, after running comfortably, lift the bow a bit and watch your speed. You will find the right trim easily.

Hi Ken
My 400DA is a bit higher 23-24 kts at 2300 and 26 GPH. Props are coming off next week to add another 150 RPM; still a little too much soot in the oil.

Thanks Tom, my boat just seems a bit slower than some. I have tuned the props but my speed is consistent. Even with a clean bottom and normal loading, I can't make those numbers unless I count SOG with a nice current!

Thanks Tom & Ken!
She does like to ride a little bow high, even with the fresh water tank full. That will take a little getting used to. Instinctively, it makes me feel like I'm wasting fuel.
So far I've only done a couple of short runs, all of which have been in rotten conditions, and I absolutely love the way she handles and rides.
I've got a 6-7 hour trip home with her tomorrow. The forecast through the Long Island Sound, East River, and NY Harbor is for only 1 footers with a strong current to power through Hell Gate and the East River, then 2 to 4 footers for the Ocean leg of the trip. That should give me a feel for how she likes to run in the conditions I most often boat in.
After very rarely using tabs on my old boat, I've got to get used to putting them down before trying to get up on plane. I've also got to get in the habit of retracting them before I get around the docks. I'm seriously considering an auto tabs solution with either the Mente or Bennett products.
I was a little spoiled with having the fuel flow sensors networked in to the Garmin system on my old boat. They gave me instant real time fuel burn numbers and really helped a lot with maximizing economy. Raymarine doesn't have a similar proprietary option that I can see, so looking for a reasonable alternative is now on my "to do" list.
Once I wrapped my head around the size difference, I was surprised at how much better she behaves around the docks than my old twin I/O 300 Sundancer, even during the time that I forgot to retract the tabs.

I know this does not make logical sense, but with less water up front (1/2 tank) my boat runs nice and level. Also, as you burn fuel you will gain a knot with 1/2 tanks of fuel versus full.

Have a safe trip home. You will love the 410!

My former 410 has sold and is going to be on my dock with her new owners, so I'll still get to see her and still feel part of the 410 group!

I saw this as I have a buddy who wants a 380-410 and was going to recommend that he go and see your old boat, but we're too late. Whoever got that boat, got one hell of a boat.

Thanks! She handled the trip really well.

Morning!

Anyone replace the coffee maker in their Dancer? 1997 400 DA. I have the original coffee maker in there that doesn't work, and want to replace it.

Thanks

The original coffee maker in my 410 is long gone. We're replacing it with a small Keurig that will sit on the counter most of the time, and get stowed under it in rough conditions.
Works for us because I'm a decaf guy and she runs on high test.

Ours was missing also when we bought our 410, but it's nice to have the extra cabinet space. Btw...we leave our Keurig next to the fridge on the counter all the time and it's never moved even in rough seas, and we've been caught out in 8-10 headers!

The previous owner left some spare parts on the boat. Among them were 2 new 2010TM-OR elements for the Racors.
I want to pick up some more of them to keep handy.
I'd also like to get a couple of the secondary fuel filters that are mounted on the engines themselves and I won't have a chance to crawl around in the bilge for a few days looking at the part numbers due to a death in the family.
Does anyone have the part numbers for those filters and a good online source for them?
Are there better choices than OEM?
Quality is more important than pricing.
Thanks!

I still use original CAT parts: CAT1R-0751 at about $35 each.

YOu are going to need to wait until you can see what filters are on your engines. Caterpillar has 2 fuel filters for the 3116/3126......1R-750 & 1R-751. The specs are the same, but the mounting thread and thread diameter is different. I use the 1R750 and pay $12.75 ea off the water at a Cat tractor dealership in Nashville TN.

Never use anything but OEM filters on a Cat....they are better, they are designed specifically for Cat products and they are cheaper than aftermarket filters.

Good call Frank. You made me take another look at what I pay, and I obviously need to have my eyes checked. I actually pay $18.35 each for filters.

Thanks Frank! I'll wait until I can get down to the boat and in the bilge to get the number. The nearest Cat dealer around here is not that close, probably an hour drive each way, so I'll probably try to get them online somewhere first.
Is the same true for engine oil filters?

I pulled out the coffee maker for extra storage space. We keep the coffee maker aft of the sink, next to the refer cabinet. It doesn't need to be stowed as it is tucked away and safe.

FYI

My dockmate has a 2000 410DA that is going to be coming up for sale. His wife has some health problems that are forcing her retirement so that boat has to go. I will put up more info later. Payoff is around $142K. He is not looking to make any money off the boat, just get out from under it.

Re: 410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread

I usually don't tab down until I'm up on plane, however I added the Mente auto tab system this winter and am anxious to see how well it works. Even with the tabs all the way down I couldn't see comfortably enough over the bow rise to see the fish net markers/bouys out on Lake Michigan without adding a cushion to sit on (I'm 6' tall), so I bought a new Garelick helm seat pedestal that lets me sit higher and that fixed the issue. Now when the helm seat is all the way down it's at the same level as bench seat to port.
-Tom

Tom,

I need to replace my helm seat pedestal. I like how yours is even with the bench to port when it is in its lowest position. If possible, can you share the Garelick model/part number so I can order the same one. Also, did you purchase the foot rest for when you have the seat in it's highest position?

Thanks,

Jeff
