410 Sundancer/Express Cruiser and 400 Sundancer/Express Cruiser **Official Thread**

Guys, I have 3116's with v-drives. What fluid do my v-drives take? I know I have this written somewhere and I am sure it is in the damn manuals on the boat, but I want to stop on the way to the marina and was hoping you could help a dumbass out... Thanks. Dan

what trannys? We have HSW800-v2’s and I’ll be doing the fluid this spring with Mobil delvac1 ATF full synthetic. I have 4 gallons sitting in the basement next to a coupe replacement filters

Thanks, I assume that the Hurth 800V's I have also take the same ATF fluid. I just called sea Ray and they don't have the full model number or serial numbers.

I think any Dexron III will "do", but the only brand I could find that meets the ZF/Hurth fluid spec was Mobile Delvac 1 Synthetic ATF (and I spent a lot of time looking). I buy if from Summit racing. Currently $34.99/gallon and you'll need 4 gallons.

Edit: Listed incorrect ATF. Replaced with correct type Dexron III.

Slim pickings out there. The one 40 I was interest in the owner decided to keep it for a few more years. That leaves me with one 410 which remains on my "maybe" list. Didn't show particularly well but was cluttered and half winterized still being in the water.

The search continues...

and add the drain plugs @dtfeld recommended! I have a pair of them waiting for the spring in my parts bin. Should make my second change quite a bit easier

Dexron III ATF.................for Hurth HSW 800-V1-1.6's; for for ZF 80V's, or ZF 85V's.

Ooopps. Just do what Frank says!! I'll go back and edit my response as to not confuse future readers

However, by all means add the EZ-Oil drains once you get them drained. Makes the job much quicker, easier and much less messy. You'll never have a drop of ATF in your bilge again.

You may have said it's too big, but have you considered @fwebster 's 450?

I've thought about it many times. Aside from the 51' LOA which is just a bit too big for us, I'm really trying to stay in the 2000+ range and get the cherry color interior. If the boat was local I probably wouldn't be able resist the temptation!

I meant to verify this the other day and the manual doesn’t spell it out - are our boats set up so that the port battery bank is engine start and house, and the starboard is engine start only?

It would be great if the manuals specified, and it would also be great if they were installed consistently. I know it's not in the manual, and I have suspicions about the consistency. I'm convinced mine were installed by the factory, but it's not like most others that I've seen.

What is fairly consistent is that the starboard bank of three batteries is: forward battery starts the port engine only. Batteries 2 and 3 are in parallel and start the starboard engine plus are the house bank.

Here's where it gets a little different. Mine has two batteries on the port side. Most only have one. That is the generator start battery. What I've described is what I think can be considered normal. Your mileage may vary.

so mine is totally different lol. I have 5 x group 27’s. All 5 are on the port side in front of the waste take on the shelf. One is standalone for generator start and on its own bank. Starboard bank is 2 of them paralleled together and I believe only used for starting the starboard main (PO had cranking batteries there), the last bank is the remaining 2, also in parallel, and I believe they are house/port main starting.

I’ll head down this week to verify. I wouldn’t mind relocating the genset battery to the starboard side, ahead of the genny. If the waste tank gets over half I get a very slight list that would probably be somewhat corrected by shifting weight.

I have this same setup. All five along port side forward of the waste tank, two in parallel for each "bank" (though I have 4 group 31's) and one standalone group 27 for the generator...

I'm sure there's a difference in the Express versus the Sundancer models. But after looking at all of the manuals, I'm not sure if any of them are consistent.

Is your house the port bank only?

I actually don't recall. It is one bank only for sure. I lost all house functions while I drove to Batteries Plus to replace one bank this year. I just don't remember which bank that was...

I'll be doing the other side this year so I can confirm in a few months :) I noticed when visiting in storage this winter that my bank with 2017 born-on batteries is a littler lower on voltage than I'd like...

gotcha, if its setup like mine it's the port bank (which is the set furthest aft on our boat)

My grp 27's are pretty well rated in the CCA department, they're 810CCA / 1000MCA each so I'll stick with them as they never had an issue cranking over the main. Of all the well documented CAT specs they don't seem to call out the required CCA in the documentation but I would imagine 1600+ is sufficient.

Agreed. I think the larger group batteries only give you more amp hours, not so much CCA? My 340 had group 27's and I never had a problem. There's really no additional DC load in a 400 above what the 340 has. Two fridges...that's the bulk of it. Perhaps a few more lights but we should all have LED's at this point, a non-issue...
