I studied the 2001 Specification Sheet and I am trying to figure out what this means:

Steps, engine room access - diamond plate

Are we supposed to have steps down to the engine room? Sure wish I did.

Also, what does "Bimini Top with boot and vertical storage" mean. I understand the top part, but whats this vertical storage thing it is talking about?

By the way, looks like previous owners kept or lost all the following:

Aft Curtain, Bridge cover, Canvas Storage bag, ship's bell, sliding screen door

I found the bridge cover to mine when I bought the boat. Still brand new, and never used. Tried to use it for this winter. Didn't have much luck getting the canvas to stretch and fit at the time of year that you would want it, so it will remain unused a little longer. The ships bell is next to the helm on the port side. Anything over 26' in our state requires a bell on board. I assume it's for fog, but can't see it being very productive. A friend keeps a motorcycle gremlin bell on his key ring for his bell requirement. I've considered ditching my screen door as well. Still have one from my last boat stashed in my garage.

I bet the "Bimini Top with boot and vertical storage" means that if you take off your glass, that you can roll up and fold the top canvas back and put the canvas in a boot bag. So the top is still up, but just rolled back, like a Sundeck or other bowrider. The "vertical storage" is probably just a fancy way of saying that the canvas top is stored while it's still up (without having to remove any framing).

I don't have the boot bag. But I do have the Aft curtain (and I use it regularly). I don't have the bridge cover. I do have the bell (but I removed it). It was annoying me when it would ring anytime I encountered rough seas). And, I have the sliding screen door. BTW - how do you live without the screen door? Don't you have bugs by you? We use that ALL the time.

We are in humidity land, John. Door is closed and a/c is on almost all year. Even in winter I keep it on humidity mode.

I have been reading about the dangers of overloading the cat 3116 due to overproping. Just wondering if anyone has reduced the pitch of their props. Mine appear to be 22 x 27 4 blade.

Factory install was usually 22 or 23 pitch for the gas boats and 24 pitch for the CAT and Cummins boats. My 2001 parts manual does show a 24 pitch for the 340hp CAT and 26 pitch was available for the Cummins, but I don't know anyone that has anything larger than the 24 on the Cummins. Are you sure 27 pitch? That would be way overpropped.

I am going by what is listed on the survey. Need to have someone at the boatyard confirm for me.

Did you make 2800rpm at WOT at the sea trial?

I'm guessing that the "27" is a typo on the survey. Probably should be a "24". (The 7 is right above the 4 on a keyboard with the number pad on the right). Mine are 22x24 and are the original props.

It was at 2700 during engine survey. Cat dealer recommended pulling the aftercoolers for cleaning. When the boat was pulled there was extensive growth on running gear so I was hoping the combination of both issues were causing the decrease in rpm. After reading threads about overloading on “Boat Diesel” and the opinion of contributors saying Sea Ray over proped boats with the 3116 I reread my survey which showed the pitch at 27”. I have a message into the yard to check while the boat is on the hard.

Things that I learned over the weekend.... JL M series 7.7 component speakers w/ separate tweeters sound absolutely amazing in the cockpit. And.....I highly recommend everyone get an 80 pound 12 year old nephew that can get into amazingly tight spaces in your boat. He was able to get all of the way to the transom on the port side to run wires for my swim up stereo remote, mounted just under the trunk lid next to the ladder.

Great to see so many getting involved with this thread.
As previously mentioned we have just purchased our 2000 400 Sedan Bridge and although it was a bit untidy she was in pretty good shape.
We are currently on a mooring which of course means no power for a week or two so we have made stainless bars to carry 2 X 200Watt solar panels. Has anyone had problems with windscreen leaks and if so what repairs were made?
    Cheers

I have been wondering what the diesel boats were running as everyone said that they handled better in docking situations. I get the more torque for lower engine rpm's and same shaft speed while cruising, but all things being equal with the prop, are R.P.M.'s not R.P.M.'s when it comes to shaft speed? I have a gas boat with 7.4 380's with 22x24" props. I turn around 4400 r.pm., wide open at around 30 mph.

I could have used your nephew a couple weeks ago when I upgraded through hulls to stainless. My friend that was helping had to pull me out from under the port exhaust by my feet after I got stuck.

My front windshield leaked. I pulled off all the trim and recaulked around the glass. Bought 55' of new trim and fit it in and caulked the corners together with black sealant. Somewhere in this thread are pictures.

An easy fix for the ringing bell is to cut a slice in a tennis ball and shove it over the bell gong. It wont make a sound until you pull the tennis ball off to ring the bell. If I am not mistaken, the bell is required part of boating on a boat this big.

I have the boot bag for the canvas top and love it. We sometimes take the glass off for a few weeks at a time and cruise with the canvas top rolled back. It sort of gives us that throwback feeling of cruising in our old bow rider. There is nothing like the sun, wind therapy, and a cold drink on a nice long cruise with the top pulled back, which pulls back easy with the glass off. The glass is a lot of work to remove and put back on, but the Swabbie and I have it down to a fast science after doing it a few times.....plus, she is the boss :)

Bugs would be horrible without the screen door.

At the time these boats were built the USCG required bells for over 39' LOA. That is no longer a requirement. You do not need a bell.

Thanks to everyone’s help on the other thread, I’ve successfully pulled our old (hideous) white Sharp Carousel microwave... looking to replace it with something shiny and new (but inexpensive)... what’s the general consensus on best (silver/stainless) microwave ovens or microwave/convection ovens?... the shelf above has a vent, so I guess we can go microwave or convection oven... any suggestions as to best (largest vs best value) that will slide right in?

    Thanks in advance,
    Simon

Just got a text from the boatyard. My props were originally 22 x 24 but have been repitched to 23.

Our 0744DB has a Tappan Micro/Conv oven and we love it. So far we have cooked pizza, biscuits, toast, and microwave anything. It works great!
