40 MPH Winds - Mooring Failed!

Incredible stories! You have all given me a lot more to think about when I overnight on the hook or on a mooring.

I was in BI the week before last (alas, no boat...) and the day we arrived (thurs) it was HOWLING in Old Harbor. Even the guys in slips by that beach restaurant Ballards looked uncomfortable with their boats bouncing. Glad it ended ok!

I heard that the north end of the anchorage near the big gray tug is a good place to anchor. Supposedly anchors hold real good there because it is muddy. I have never tried anchoring at BI; I like to sleep at night:wink:

Although I continue to perfer to grab a mooring, instead of renting a slip, (protected harbor's only now) when I go back to Block in a few weeks, I'm opting for a slip even if it means being rafted up at Paynes or Champlins (which I'm not a big fan of). Because, I agree with you, I like to sleep!

I guess I am a "Glutt'n" for punishment.

I went back to Block for Labor Day weekend. Anchored in the Great Salt Pond (New Harbor) this time. Everything was "like a pond" until about 1:30AM on Saturday night. The winds kicked up to about 25Knots.

We were fine...but others did not weather the storm so well. Many boats dragged their anchors. One boat ended up on the rocks on the breakwater at the entrance to the harbor.

I think the issue here was that the anchorage was so crowded, that most people did not put out enough line on their anchors because they were afraid of swinging into other boats. Others had multiple boats anchored on only one anchor.

So...two more things to remember when anchoring....every boat must put out an anchor, and if there is not enough room to put out sufficient amount of line...then you need to find another place to anchor. Otherwise...the winds of Block Island will get you!!

Am Pretty sure your talking about waters edge, and anytime i stop there to grab a bite to eat, thats the one thing, thats always on my mind , and growing up in brooklyn , i spent alot time watching the fishing boats come into sheepshead bay, they had some great restaurants there years ago ,i have friend that keeps his boat at the hudsons yacht club in mill basin

Am pretty sure that your fourth grade English teacher would weep bitter tears if she saw that post. Grammar school children have better writing skills.

Glutton for punishment you say? I was there too and you never know.

You forgot " and stay with your friggin boat!" particularly in a wind storm!

Did you say sleep?

Ok, it's 2:00 am and I was sleeping, until bamm and crash, it felt and sounded like I was being hit by a frieght train. I get up and grab some shorts and out to the cockpit. Low and behold a 30' powerboat on my nose! UNATTENDED!

This boat dragged anchor from the anchorage, across the channel, through the town mooring field and smack into my boat at the boat basin. There was some other excitement involved but I wont say much more for now until the insurance thing is worked out.

Unbelieveable, that was your boat that got hit! We were suppose to go. I had 2 friends there, a Sea Ray 38, and a 37 Egg Harbor, they called me Friday. But they said the moorings were full, the anchorage was full and overcrowded, and all the marinas were maxed out. So we decided to stay put.

I hope the insurance works out. Hopefully it's just gelcoat damage only.

being a new boater, stories like this scare the #$%^ out of me...glad it worked out for you though
