I looked at an 87 390 EC with GM 7.4 gas engines.
It may need an oil pan on the SB engine.

Looking for tips, especially if there is sufficient clearance to change the oil pan without pulling the engine.
And, if it is necessary to lift the engine can it be separated from the trans and then lifted a few inches to accomplish the change?

I believe the answer to your first question is no....there is not sufficient clearance to change the oil pan without lifting the engine. The second part of your question....it is actually easier to disconnect the shaft from the transmission and lift both the engine and transmission at the same time. That is what I would do. That way you can block and support the engine across the stringers to safely reach under it.

I am curious.....what is up with the oil pan?

I viewed the vessel on blocks yesterday and there was at least 2 1/2 qts of oil under the SB engine.
Port side was as dry as a bone, no water etc.
The vessel has been in heated storage since the fall of 2019.

I suspect the oil pan may have a rust issue.

Mercruiser or Crusader engines? Crusader usually has cast aluminum oil pan that will not rust and the oil leak would be something else.
