Considering replacing the 16,000 btu salon MarineAir in my salon. It is 27 years old and still works well enough but is very loud and makes sleeping at night difficult sometimes. The 9,000 btu in the guest stateroom works great also and is much quieter. Has anyone replaced one of the older units with an updated MarineAir or some other brand? Was the noise factor greatly reduced?

Yes.

The old style piston compressors tend to get louder and louder as the compressor wears. When mine died, I replaced them both with the new style Marine Air Turbo series that uses a turbine type compressor. They come with a digital control panel and are pretty much plug and play. The noise difference is dramatic.

I'm a huge Mermaid Air fan. We have replaced all 3 with them. They are much more quiet, and less expensive. Fairly simple to replace.

I just replaced the 16,000 BTU unit in the salon of my boat for the same reason you mentioned. It worked great, but was L-O-U-D. I bought a new Cruisair that interfaced with my current thermostat and couldn't be any happier. It is nearly silent - the difference is night and day. Definitely a worthwhile upgrade.

I bought from an active member on CSR that was great to work with:
