380DA Floor Project

Looks amazing. Nice work.

Looks great!
FINISHED

Red Oak strips installed on the vertical surface between main and aft cabin with a custom cut red oak trim on the floor. They complement the new Red Oak companionway steps I made last month.

Project total cost was under $550 and if it wasn't for the flooring order delay, I could have knocked it out in about a month (mainly weekends).

Last project before boating season is a custom storage cabinet above the new Isotherm Stainless Fridge/Freezer.View attachment 99876 View attachment 99877

I know its not a "flooring project" but as part of the cabin steps/floor upgrade, I made a new custom storage cabinet over the Isotherm Fridge/Freezer. I designed it mainly for bags of chips, bread, etc as we are always looking for somewhere "safe" to store these items and yet keep them readily available.

Its hard to tell because I painted it flat black inside but it goes back about 20" so its pretty deep.

Love the flooring and you've done a great job documenting your project. I'm laying templates out on my floor now to get a final idea what I want to do. I take it the laminate you used locked in place with no tapping required to get them to lock in place; otherwise, how did you get the tight fit to the edges?

I used Traffic Master Allure (grip strip) from Home Depot. They have a one inch wide acrylic tape adhesive edge that is incredibly strong. I accidentally touched two planks together and when I tried to pull them apart they broke!

I found that the key to tight edging is to make a paper template for that piece that butts up against the carpet and keep tracing and modifying until the paper fits perfectly before transferring to a plank for cutting.

Yes, I threw away quite a few pieces of flooring because I didn’t cut correctly but it wasn’t a big deal.

I started on the Port side and worked across to the Stbd side. Use the wax paper that comes with the flooring to protect the adhesive edges from sticking to your templates and when dry fitting your cut flooring.
When you are 100% satisfied of the fit. Remove the wax paper and line up carefully before rolling the edges together with a flooring roller.

Great work! I’m using the same type of flooring, but a different color. You’re a better craftsman than me!

Where did you get the aluminum hatch trim? It looks great.

Aluminum trim is off the shelf Home Depot....waaay cheaper than buying 8' lengths and paying for shipping. Depending on the thickness of plywood you are using buy either 1/2" x 1/2" angle or 3/4" x 1/2" angle (that is what I used as floor is 1/2" and hatches are 3/4")
Attach with #4 x 3/4" stainless steel flathead screws, countersink the trim correctly with a 82 degree countersink (important for the screw head to be flush with the trim). Screws and countersink you can get from Amazon. Practice your screw hole/countersink set-up on a scrap piece of aluminum as it is important to get it right.

Buy yourself a good miter box and use a hacksaw with a Bi-metal 24TPI blade. Clamp the aluminum trim to a scrap piece of plywood and when you angle cut the trim in the miter box cut thru the aluminum and plywood for smooth accurate cuts/joints. Use a good file to "adjust" any mitered joint that may be off a little and use 220 grit sand paper on the cut ends to remove any really sharp edges to protect bare feet.

On the other hand, What model Isotherm fridge is that? Looks sharp!

Finally was able to install my Treadmaster anti-slip strips on the new steps. I used 3m Acrylic 2-sided tape and it went on easy. Used a small floor roller to make sure there were no air bubbles.

Flooring should be shipping soon and I am anxious to get started on floor.View attachment 97734
Hi can you tell me what version of the tread master anti slip strips you used? Did you trim them down?

Hey:
I had some leftover pieces of Treadmaster Diamond (Teak Color) from when I applied it to my swim platform. I purchased full sheets from Defender:

I made a few paper templates to see what length, width and corner radius looked good and then I transferred it on to the Treadmaster piece. It is easy to cut with either an razor knife or good scissors.

I applied it to the companionway steps with 3m acrylic 2-sideded tape (that stuff is super agressive so make sure you have it lined up correctly!)

Sorry I didnt reply earlier...i missed your post somehow.
I installed an Isotherm Cruise CR 195 (Stainless Steel) when the Norcold unit died. I did some serious research and while waaaay more expensive, the features and warranty is worth it. Original "hole" in cabinet had to be modified and little but it looks' factory installed.

@Gallf1 can I hire you to do mine when I purchase her? Wow, absolutely gorgeous, great work. Looks like your boat is in your back yard. Mine will be 90+ minutes from home, which I think would make a project like this take longer (crap, I forgot/need this tool, I need to make a saw cut, marina won't let me do it on the dock, etc..)
