370 Venture - both engines hydrolocked ?

Apologies, didn't mean to create a story line....I was simply asking why he may have been " reportedly" going in reverse while 25 miles out overnighting.

I put this in the general thread since there is more of a chance that it will be viewed.

A slipmate of mine has a brand new 370 Venture and on their first overnight outing they ran into a huge issue.

Reportedly while in reverse they took a solid wave from the back of the boat. This wave caused both engines to suck in water and hydrolock completely disabling the boat approximately 25nm offshore.

Has anyone every hear of this happening?

I think it's fair you might wonder why they were in reverse 25NM offshore, I did too. I'll be surprised if we ever find out.

I think I'll go with, he was in reverse because his wife was trying to snag his favorite hat with the boat hook after the wind had blown it off.

OR, they may have been practicing "close quarter maneuvers".

Just a quick follow up on this for earlier this year.

the boat owner in question stopped by my dock last night in his new boat. I asked him if they ever came up with what happened to his boat and he said that the marina was sticking to the fact that he backed down fast enough to hydrolock both engines. It still seems very odd though as thousands of boat owners put their boats in reverse without this type of an issue.

His new boat is quite the catch though - It's a Harris Crown 250 Pontoon boat with twin 300HP Mercury's. Top speed is in excess of 60 mph and purchase price is just shy of six figures as equipped. :smt009

That is interesting they claim that. It would seem that the engineers would have been able to produce that same effect in their pre-release testing of the engine.

Does he still have the venture, or did he replace it with the pontoon? That is quite the difference in boating style.

On a related note, I keep returning to the Venture as a possible next boat for us some day. The only thing that I find a possible challenge is the limited capacity of the fresh water holding tank.

How could tHe marina stick to the" "fact" that he backed down fast enough to hydro lock both engines" when the marina was not there to witness the action they allege caused the problem?

Something isn't right.

Maybe this will be the first opportunity to repower one of these with 350's (or 400's) and bigger props? I have never been on one, but the reviews look like its takes pretty high rpms to get on plane (~5k). I am curious what the torque curves look like on the bigger motors vs the 300's, or if the special cowlings would fit. Just a thought as the idea of having all of the propulsion gear out of the saltwater seems like a good idea. I wish they had tried it on something a little smaller.

Chaparral was having problems with exhaust baffles breaking loose on their 8.1 L Volvo engines. Their solution was to eliminate the baffles. I was unfortunate to get one of these boats and it hydrolocked 3 times just from slowing down - water backing up the exhaust. My guess is water backed up the exhaust on both engines simultaneously.

I can see by many posts re the question on why reversing 25nm in ocean that there aren't many big game fisherman reading here. I'm not into fishing anymore but off shore backing into seas is just part of it.
IO's no bueno for this reason.

No matter what the final results are, I learned a lot about CCs and outboards and what not to do.
Thanks to all.
