340 SUNDANCER THREAD

Barryg

I payed about $1900 for the props. I have a real good prop guy over here who does it the old fashion way. He sells new props as well as works on them, but the new ones he pulls out the box and goes over them before he calls you and tells you they are in. I probably payed 200 extra of what you could buy direct from michigan for. As the changing the props, i did it myself. I have my 340 on a lift so i just got in the water and did it myself. It takes about 1.5 hrs to do by yourself provided the old ones come off somewhat easy. If you dont have that available to you, a diver can do it and it should not cost more than about $250 - again if the others come off with minor strain. I lamented about the expense of changing props for 2 years - but it was well worth it after running the boat with the new wheels. I will try to post some pictures this weekend if i can figure out how to do it.

Todd, my man, what's going on ova dare in lovely St. Amant? Are you gonna go to Nunmaker's Shin Dig next weekend? I'm just waiting on my struts to come in and hopefully I'll splash next Thursday or Friday at the latest.

I'm getting a paddle/trans speed alarm on my '05 340. Any idea what this means?

Currently I own a Silverton 312, but I am seriously considering a 1999 34 Sundancer. Any words of wisdom regarding this year and style would be much appreciated.

Mark

I've had a 2000 340 for 9 years. Here are my thoughts...

- Style is still relatively fresh, even though newer 340's are more "curvy"
- Good headroom below, except in the head (no pun intended)
- V-berth bed will need "mattress modification" unless you like sleeping on hard cushions
- I would love seperate fridge / freezer and a bit more counter space
- would love a hard-wall either into the master or rear staterooms (to better separate the kids off)
- very tight in the engine room with v-drives
- handles well, planes fairly quickly
- good conversation room in cockpit
- good sized swim platform
- basically trouble-free for 9 years
- the fact I haven't traded says something!

Its a nice boat... It came with Yamars, and I would love to own one of those... You will spend a lot of money on gas. It you boat in salt water... I recommend keeping up on the exhausts (find out when it was done last). I am installing stainless steel headers on my 340, which should last many years, and give my increased fuel economy and speed... Get a compression test on the gennerator, I hydrolocked my genny and had to rebuild it.

We have had our 2001 340 for two years. We have put over 200 hours on the engines. We have spent up to 7 nights on the boat and we consider it comfortable with enough room for us. We have had up to 12 people on board for a round trip cruise to a restaurant. Every one had a place to sit both on top and below. We did not feel crowded. Now about fuel burn, the good news is that we do not have to drive it to work everyday. We recommend this boat if it fits your situation.

Repowering 340SD -01

Hello Everybody!

Firstly, I am a new member here and recently upgraded from a 260CC to a 2001 340 Sundancer. Love the boat so far.

I purchased the boat from the US with both engines in siezed condition. This will require som action from my part, so I need some advice from you 340 owners.

I´m not planning to buy brand new engines but a pair i good condition newer than the boat.

Is it a good idea to upgrade to 7,4MPI or 8,1MPI?

Can I use my Hurth HSW 630V V-drives on all Mercruiser?

Can you find used Diesels for resonable money?

Tips and experiences appreciates....:smt100

Concerning the thread about the starboard engine running burning more fuel than the port.

I have a 340 DA 2000 v-drive with 310's that I recently purchased. My mechanic who is well respected in the area
said not to rely on the sync meter to get to the sweet spot while on plane. He also said the starboard engine will run faster than the port due to counter-rotation of the starboard screw.

As a result the starboard engine runs about 250 rpm more than the port to get to the sound of the sync'd engines resulting in burning more fuel. The engine sync meter displays at the 10 oclock position. Maybe one of my tac's need to be calibrated.

Does anyone else experience this? Does anyone use the sync meter that is located on the dash between the two engine sets of gauges?

fyi - total fuel consumption on a 130 mile trip with 4 adults and supplies running at 3400rpm's was .78 mpg which seems in line with the rest of you.

I was told by others that both engines should be showing the same rpm's. This was confirmed by a picture John (Shell's Island) thread on his trip posted showing both engines running the same rpm's

I was taught that the enginges would talk to each other when they are in sync, and that you get a feel for the sweet spot the more you drive your boat... I typically use my sync meter, but sometimes adjust the RPMs to account for valiance in the harmonics sounds from the engines... BTW, I believe that both engines turn in the same direction and the transmision gearing allow the props to counter rotate...

Rcknecht,
I agree with you on the counter rotation comment. When the engines are in harmony - is there a variance of more than 50 rpm on the tac's?
I was told there should not be.

The Tacs arn't that accurate to worry about 50 RPM... Some times mine stick. I like to see my sync metter straight up or close to it...

Tacs are not reliable to 50 rpm in our older boats. My sync meter stands fairly straight when the engines sound in sync. I use sound to keep them in sync. Miles per gallon of .78 seems in the ballpark for me at cruise heavy. Can get .85 with a below half fuel.

Hello, I was wondering if anyone had experienced a similar generator issue? We have a 2001 340 with 7.4L's... Westerbeke Generator. At the end of last season, our generator developed some sort of an exhaust leak. The local mechanic says that the heat exchanger/ exhaust manifold needs to be replaced. He says it is a combination part??? I haven't found any such part. I can find a heat exchanger and I can find replacement exhaust manifold? Anyone ever hear of a combo???

Thanks,
Billy and Nicole

You can buy my whole genset for what an Exhuast Manifold would cost... I think the mechanic means that water runs through the exhaust manifold... there is a sparate heat exhanger... My genset has 300 hours on it and the manifold is in good shape... Here is some pictures I took today...

hello all

I have a 2006 340 da and the cockpit sound system has stopped working... Does anybody know where the amp is mounted... It is the upgraded sound system

Thanks
Ken

Is that a 7kw? Thats what I am told is in mine... Why did you replace it?

Billy

The 7 KW and the 4.5 KW have the same engine... My generator is the 4.5 KW... What happened is I attached a fresh water wash hose connection to the strainer and hydrolocked the generator, and bent two the connecing rods... I replaced all three pistons, connecting rods, rings, bearings, belts, impeller, spark plugs, oil filter, and coil... When I reasembled it I installed the timing belt wrong, and the mechanic thinks I bent the valves... I got tired of fixing it and opted for a new generator... I spent $2K in parts and considered it a lesson... My new 5KW has a different fuel pump, carborator, filters, and other parts... So I just want to get rid of the old generator...
