340 SUNDANCER THREAD

Windlass issue now UGH! Everything worked perfectly last week. Now, the windlass brings the anchor UP no problem. However, it will not drop the anchor. I goes for 2 seconds then stops and just spins. The chain is not balled up. Even when I remove it all from the gypsy wheel and manually drop the anchor it won’t even let out the nylon rode — it just spins but no issues bring it back up. Suggestions for issue and fix? Thank you in advance.
Is the finger pressing the chain/rope against the Gypsy ? That’s the most common problem with the Lofrans Progress 1 windlass. I was having a problem, mine would not retrieve the chain or top, and when I backed down to set the anchor, the chain/rope just kept coming out.

I got a new spring and post from P2marine.com. Lofrans changed the spring, finger and the post for the finger in 2002. They are either pre-2002, or Post 2002. If your boat is a 2002, look at the post the finger is on. If it’s a 9mm drop in post, held in by a set screw on the aft of the windlass body, it’s post-2002. If it’s a 8MM SCREW IN post, it’s pre-2002.

I ordered a new finger from Steve Dixon dixonprecision@gmail.com. He’s a machinist and makes them. You won’t find it anywhere else. He’s in GA, and will have it to you within a few days, and takes PayPal. Fixed my problem.

New switch covers for dash ! Old switch covers were deteriorating, and engraved labels on dash hard to read from cleaning.

New Wire Marine, design your own. Easy to do, large library of pictures, and the switch covers are laser etched so the lights behind shine through. With the tool they sell, takes about 15 seconds per switch to remove, wipe the switch behind the cover, and install a new cover.

What the Heck are these under the Helm of my 2001 SD 340. discovered them while installing a 8410xsv chart plotter and replacing the Garmin GPSmap 498 that was on the boat. Found the SeaTalk bus and the original GPS cables under as well but these have me stumped. Boat also has a tridata ST60+ and St5000+ autopilot that are functional.

This is the first boat I've had with a windlass and I can't seem to find a manual that describes the proper operation. When I go to Lofrans' site, what they describe as a manual for download is actually a parts list. At any rate, I'm having an issue with my Lofrans Progress I on my 2001 310 Sundancer. When retrieving, the finger is not always making contact, with the rope or chain, which frequently causes it to slip. If I push the finger against the gypsy, it seems to resolve the issue. Based on what I'm reading here, that would seem like it needs a spring replacement. If I'm replacing the spring, should I be looking to replace anything else at the same time?

I'm also trying to understand how the clutch should be set. Currently, there doesn't seem to be any give at all. I generally raise the anchor using the windlass until it's a few inches from the top, then finish cranking it up manually to avoid having the windlass slam it tightly against the roller and frame.

Is there much wear in the finger? I would def start with the spring. I have all chain, the finger is worn pretty good from that, but still works flawlessly.

With all chain, the finger is not really needed, so that is another option. I always run mine up with the windless, as I get close I depress the button 1 sec at a time to bump it the last 5’ or so.

Make sure the engines are running and using that to pull the weight of the boat to the anchor (create slack) and not the windless

The finger doesn't seem to be worn much from what I can tell. I do the same with that last 5', but it seems to run so fast that regardless how careful I am, the last foot always slams up against the roller.

From reviewing a number of Youtube videos, it appears that you can adjust tension of the clutch. Is it supposed to be set to allow a little slippage to prevent it from slamming?

Brand new 340 owner!!!! Looks like I will be jumping from the 300 forum to here. Wife and I drove to VT for survey, stayed our first night on it(no pillows:() and had it hauled to Henderson the next day. We did spend some time on Champlain the evening, great area for boating! If CA is closed again next summer we may do the circle around from St Lawrence to the Erie Canal to Oswego and back to Henderson. Plans were to drive it back the canal to Oswego but to much flooding and debris to consider it. Love the boat, big difference (obviously) in size from the 300, the extra storage is the big thing for us. Love the 8.1's and the v-drives, at the moment missing bow thruster but am picking it up fairly quickly.

Congratulations! She's a beauty. The 8.1's really have so much torque that maneuvering around the docks without the bow thruster will become 2nd nature after a while. Neutral is your friend :)

Best of luck!
