340 Sundancer Delivery from Washington DC to Annapolis - o/a April 18 2008

Perhaps we could get a quorum together at BIH and get this motion passed?

That could work. All we need is someone to “second” the motion and then all in favor say Aye – right? We don’t need no stinking paperwork.

I doubt it. I think you'll run into the danger of a filibuster. I mean look at how this thread started.... someone asked to move the boat from DC to Annapolis (clearly in the "sissy" part) and some sissy from that area comes along and tells him to trailer it (a 340 no less)... I think that proves the point.
Yes, but many others from the Sissapeake told him to drive it, and did so rather emphatically. Please don't impugn the boaters from an entire region based upon one person who has yet to identify if he even owns a boat.

I do agree with jrirvine that the mouth of the Chester River can be nasty with a NW wind, but it will never be as "manly" as the lower bay. But then again, Cape Horn is even more manly, so what's really the point? I boat where I boat because of the proximity to where I live. The fact that it happens to be one of the most gorgeous areas in the world to do what we do sort of makes up for the lack of manliness.

All good advice here. We've made the trip around Point Lookout many times over the past three years and we've not had a problem. I do try to time my arrival at the mouth of the Potomac with the outgoing tide, but as long as the wind isn't blowing hard, it's really not an issue. Watch for crab pots around the spider light at Point Lookout.

Heading north up the bay, stay clear of the "Targets" north of Point No-Point - it is restricted water used by the Navy. Watch for crab pots around Point No-Point light and the mouth of the Patuxent. Also stay well clear of the LPG dock at Cove Point, you can't miss it, it is a huge structure out on the water. It is also a security zone...stay outside the bouys.

Watch for commercial traffic heading up and down the Bay, and to be honest there is plenty of water, no need to run in the shipping channel.

From there it's a pretty easy run if the wind is not blowing 20knots in your face like it was for us during last year run to Baltimore. :)

Enjoy!

You're going to love the trip and the memories.

See if you can find out when the impellers were changed last. I would suggest that you carry a set of spare impellers and some basic hand tools.

......, I am skipping out on work on Friday to do it, and a fine fellow from ClubSeaRay.com is taking the day off as well to help me .......

Who is the mystery 'fellow'........

You had me agreeing with you in principle until I got to that ... that phrase. "Most gorgeous areas in the world," is certainly sissyspeak. Motion denied.

Best regards,
Frank

Great point Frank. Perhaps that statement was a bit over the top. I can be prone to hyperbole at 2:20AM. What I meant to say was something that ended with "git 'er done"!

Larry, a final thought before you head out on what will be a great day. I have put about 12 hours on my boat so far this season, all on the Middle and upper Potomac. Watch our for debris in the river-we have seeen lots off timber floating down the river-it is usually worst at the confluences of the various creeks into the Potomac. Keep a sharp eye and you will be fine.

I too - have made this trip ..... and .. as a maiden voyage.
You will love it and it will get you over the "scared" hump real fast.

I had a friend of mine who is a mechanic run with us as a peace of mind and a safety net. And we did have a small issue regarding plug wires to deal with. But we were able to figure it out and fix it to get us home.
Still a lot of fun and a great experience.

As far as the car thing, get somebody to drop you off.....
That way you don't have to go back down to get the car after you are tired and want to relax after this trip.

Enjoy.....

Update - the day after. One word: FLAWLESS. A perfect day and a perfect maiden voyage. The water down the Potomac and up the Bay was like glass the whole way. The day was warm and clear and in a word, glorious. You all know just what that means.

She hummed along at 3,900 RPM and made the trip in well under 7 hours. CSR contributed some good tips and above all, a 1st rate companion, who - between his seamanship and his love for the water - ensured a perfect day of cruising.

After the workout, moored at her new home in Annapolis, scrubbed up and shining with a view of the harbor and beyond, she sat looking out at the Severn and the Bay and I swear she somehow smiled and whispered that she was ready to go again.

PS: Did someone suggest trailering instead?

Glad you had such a lovely trip. I was also out on the "upper bay" on Friday for my orientation trip. It was absolutely perfect for boating. You could not have asked for a better day especially in mid April!

My trip however was not flawless. Had a problem with the starboard drive not shifting properly. Could not practice docking with the delivery captain. Dealer will be replacing shifting control and cable so my trip "home" to Middle River on Sunday is canceled. But based on the weather forecast, probably a good thing. You know how sissy us upper bay boaters are!!!

Larry,
That was a great trip. It was a pleasure to spend the day with you out on the water - dodging debris, getting sunburned and eating great sandwiches. I am sure you will have a great time with your 340 out in Annapolis. It's a great boat and will be a great friend. Thanks for giving me an excuse to evade work!:smt038

But we didn't see any trailers....

" She hummed along at 3,900 RPM"

I am no expert, just sharing what we run ours at. Our 330DA with twin 7.4s likes to run at 3300 - 3400. Not sure what your 340 is powered with but 3900 "feels" too high to me. Others on here should be able to tell you where she likes to cruise.
