340 dancer risers and manis

Hi Partyoffive

I didn't see the manifolds when they were removed, as the boat is not local, and I didn't ask - probably should have. They didn't mention their condition either.

All is well "down under" except our exchange rate which makes buying boat parts from the US all the more expensive. I was almost going to import the manifolds from the US but they ended up being cheaper through the local Mercruiser agent/tech when all the costs were added in. Not having to replace the elbows also resulted in savings as I thought I was going to have to replace these too. They charged me A$591.44 plus GST (10%) for each manifold back in June.

Whilst the manifolds were off I also had the plugs (NGK TR55IX) changed so that's one less hassle in the future.

I just had the manifolds on my 8.1's replace by a local Mercruiser agent/mechanical business here in Australia. Mani's were 9 years old all with salt water use. They said the elbows are stainless steel and didn't need replacing. I'll let you know if they fail any time soon.

I also have the 8.1's with SS Elbows. Mine are original to my knowledge, the boat is an 08'. Anyone have any info as to determine when they need replaced? They look fine to me, other than soot inside of course.

No known timeframe, although I seem to recall the mentioning about one developing a pinhole leak.

Mine are still going strong after 12 years and 600 hours in salt water

Well I should be good then, I'm 300 hours, only 100 ish in Saltwater the rest in fresh! Thanks for the feedback.

Got my manifolds off, decided to start with the two in the center of the boat since they appeared to be the hardest to access (I can't walk between my motors when the Manifolds and Risers are on the motors) The starboard engine was fairly easy and came off without any unexpected issues. The Port was a bit of a bear, here's why. The Oil Filter bracket is attached to the Manifold with two studs on the top side of the manifold and one on the side of the manifold. I removed the bolts from the stud to remove the bracket, hoping there was enough play to lift the bracket off the studs to free the manifold, no such luck! Any tips or tricks to help with this are GREATLY appreciated. Cheers!
