Hi,

Looking at purchasing 1999 340DA with 7.4's and V drives. A few questions to start:

I have heard about a design flaw in the exhaust that needs to be addressed... does this apply to this vintage? These engines have approx. 1000hrs with new risers and manifolds.

What do I need to be looking for wrt maintenance on these engines at 1000 hrs (the proverbial 1000hr tune-up)?

Any specific, common problems I need to be aware of... water intrusion issues, part failures, etc.?

The boat appears to have lived a good life to this point. She has had a steady diet of salt water however.

Not that I'm an expert, but when you get it surveyed, make sure you have the engines really gone through. Compression check at least maybe even a leak down if you can. Make sure you are able to read the computers. Be there with the surveyor fir sure. If something seems wrong or looks funny, ask. That's a lot if hours, but that doesn't mean they don't have a lot of hours left.

I'm not sure about the exhaust, but I know the 330's had issues. Maybe someone else can chime in on that.

Since it has 1000 hours of salt water use, really check out all the through hulls, make sure the deck us solid and not soft. When it's hailed out, take your time, look it over very carefully, as your surveyor will no doubt do. Good luck, they are nice boats!

Thanks for the advise, noted. I had never heard of a leak test before... did some reading and it is a definite on this one.

Cheers,
Jim

It should have had the new design verilift exhaust sytem installed by 2000. Check for leaks in the large verilift exhaust. They are $700 a piece to replace. Check for leaks in the dripless seals. They at tides strong seal without cross over cooling and they should have been replaces. The cutlass bearings should have been replaced when the dripless seals were replaced. The transmission shoul had an oil change and filters cleaned. Get a compression test. The forward deck near the hatches sometime get water leaks the core rots... The area near the windless leaks too. Get a surveyor who can check for core rot. The engines are good for a long time, with little mainentenance...
