3116 & 3126

I find that Caterpillars are cleaner and tighter than most diesels. Mine have 1400 hours on them and they don't leak or drop anything........I don't even use diapers. With out the AirSpes, the crankcase vent tube will drop few drops of oil and you will have a slight mist. With them, you can eat lunch in the engine room.

When I had my 450 DA w/3116 I rolled up half a diaper and wedged it in front of the crankcase vent tube to catch the emission as I didn't have the airseps. Changed it a couple of time. That was fine, otherwise it was a clean engine.

Just so we don't lead anyone down the wrong path here, the engine crankcase has some pressure in it. If you completely block the vent tube, you will force the crankcase fumes out somewhere else that probably wasn't leaking until you blocked the vent tube.

Ok, here's a question. How does it stop turbo whine? I take the filter off and I see a straight shot, well curved actually, to the turbo. I would think there would be some kind of barrier to minimize sound. Something to deflect sound but allow airflow. I don't see any kind of muffler design going on with mine.

Correct Frank, I would place the rolled up diaper just below or at the tube making sure not to block it ,but to collect what may drip or blow out of it.

Kind of like what I use underwear for.

Mike,

The airsep doesn't eliminate the turbo noise, but it does make it tolerable, to the point that the dogs can live with it and so you can have a normal conversation at the helm while underway at cruise speeds. You have 3126's, so without hearing yours, I'm kinda shooting in the dark. If you think you have a problem, call walker and talk to their tech folks to see if they have a suggestion.

I don't know if I can afford that call right now...

Do these come standard or are they aftermarket? I'm looking at 410's, and most (if not all) of them seem to have these installed already.

OK.....so, we're discussing the 3116 and the 3126 Cat. There were several models that used both engines; the 450DA, the 420AC, and probably the 400SB. Since I know there are a couple of guys here with the 450DA and different motors, I was wondering how Sea Ray configured these boats with transmission ratios and props. I would assume the 3126 would use a lower ratio trans and/or a prop with more pitch. I know this would translate to more fuel usage (more HP) and speed. Just wondering about the net efficiency.

Wow....a 380 with 3126's...must be a rocket!!!!LOL (hard to work on them in the eng. space?)
