300DB Restoration Continues-Bottom Paint

Thank you.

When people begin realize what all of us have done to have the freedoms that we have I believe they will then begin to understand why this is the best country on the planet. People serve not for themselves - but for the people we have pledged to protect. To defend the people and our constitution against all enemies both foreign and domestic. And I thank you as well!!

Amen. I was in the sandbox too amoung other places....

A "Veteran" whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve, is someone who, at one point in his/her life, wrote a blank check payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to, and including his/her life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today, who no longer understand that fact.

I just read the interlux website, looks like Gelcoat is porous.
Im going to check with our paint companies to get a better understanding about it. We recently painted a oil tanker, and used a rustolium bottom paint becuase that was the spec from the manufacturer and i was told that it will fail in 11800hrs aginst salt and corrosion. The maufacturer and paint company both stand behind Gelcoat for the reason that paint is to porous and breaks down way faster than gelcoat. This looks like 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

It isn't about how long one or the other last it is protecting the bottom from things growing on it Paint will protect Gel-coat will not if you don't want to paint do a lot of push ups so you will have strong arms for scraping unless you are going to trailer that 270.

Thank you.

Amen Brother they is also don't realize the amount of education that the Officers running the Military have. My son is a Lt Col in the USAF and has a Masters in Aviation Technology along with everything else he has had to learn in the past 24yrs starting as an enlisted and working his way up. I know separation from the loved ones is hard on all military and their family’s, my son just got back from Afghanistan in mid May in time to see my oldest grandson Graduate HS and had to leave in mid November for Italy for 2.5 yrs. His wife is an E-8 and will retire in June with 23yrs in and she and their 2 youngest will join him.

I give thanks to all that have served to keep our Country FREE, with out our Military we would not have the Greatest and Strongest Country on Gods Green Earth.:smt038:thumbsup::thumbsup::smt038

Although I am on a trailer, I painted mine to seal and protect it. That is why I went with the Interlux Micron as it is made for those of us that trailer.

I don't think your decision should be based on whether you are in salt or not. If all you are going to do is put it in the water for a few days, then place it back on the trailer, then I probably would not paint the bottom. I would do a good soap and fresh water rinse when you pull it out of the water. Bottom paint is made to "peel" off as you are going through the water so slim and sea critters can't stick to your boat. Although others who have more knowledge can chime in here for a better explanation.

BTW, a gallon of bottom paint is about $240..........:smt009

Wow, all this talk about sanding and bottom paint makes me really miss my boat. There is nothing better than being through with a bottom job. Good job on that one. One question, why the alternating colors for the barrier?

Not exactly, ablative paints will slowly wear off the bottom but epoxy paints will not. Micron CSC is an ablative paint. Generally, If you can see it, it will still work.

I was told by Interlux to apply it that way. It will also show up easy if it starts to come off.

A couple of the guys in my marina put their trailerable boats in for the summer and they don't bottom paint them. The one guy I know pretty well did tell me he pulls it out every couple weeks and runs it to the car wash to blast it off. I asked him how long he had been doing it and he said he has been doing this for 5 years with no problems.
