300 - 320 Sundancer Opinion on Moving Up

jmeirhofer,

The strange thing is that pictures show 496, but they state 320HP, which is HP for 6.2 engines. Here's a link to mercruiser sterndrive 496s config.

http://www.mercurymarine.com/engines/inboards/sterndrives/mpi496.php

According to Sea Ray archives the optional equipment does show optional T-375hp, Twin Gasoline Stern Drives: T-496 Magnum® Bravo® III MCM (280 kW), but as I noted it's 375HP. So, since the picture shows 496, then the ad should state 375HP vs. 320HP.

If the link doesn't work go to Sea Ray home page and then to archives. Choose year and model, then click on Optional Equipment.

As for the sterndrives, we have tons of very good info on this site, so do some searches and you'll have plenty of reading on how to prevent issues and maintain the BIIIs. The drives do need to be removed to be fully serviced. Since the boat will come out once a year it's fine to do the maintenance then. However, make sure to find some reading on BIIIs having corrosion issues even in fresh water. There are some precautions you can take to keep them alive longer, but there's no guaranty that just b/c you're in fresh water you're 100% saved. There's constant debate whether having stern drives pays in the end vs. V-drives. If you don't need to trailer the boat and it'll be stored in water most of the time I would consider V-drives (maintenance free). The biggest selling point for BIIIs is the performance. So, it all depends on how you'll be using your boat. But, 320DA is not a speed boat, rather pleasure cruiser. So, do some more thinking if the stern drives will be best fit for your needs or not.

Thanks for the link. I have read that along with about 20 other message strings on other message boards, countless service entries (amazing how many are on the web) and a few how to articles.

While it is not something I would have thought necessary anually I can see why you would want to do it. It also sounds like something I can readily handle on my own (make that with a lifting partner). Since I plan on pulling what ever boat I wind up with each winter for a month or so for cleaning and maintanence it would just make good sense.

I am going to the MM dealer this weekend to take a look at it and see if I want to persue it further. I also finally found some info on the ProCharger. It is a type of supercharger and by the estimates on their site it pushes the hp to 475. They also claim an increase in fuel economy.

Again thanks for the valuable info.

Are those stock B3 outdrives? I'm not sure how much HP the stock drives are rated for.

I'd also be curious as to who did the engine work. Somehow I doubt Merc will cover anything on those motors now.

That is a good point. The B3 is only rated for 400hp. These Procharger kits sell for about $5k a each. Maybe they could be removed and sold.

Hmmm.... A few things... The 496's were an option. Merc will not warranty them with ProChargers. 496's should also not be supercharged. They are not built with forged components and cannot handle the stress. Catastophic failure rates are high even with minimal boost. If they have actually been running enough boost for a hundred more horsepower, those motors have been highly stressed. It is also a bad idea to run superchargers with stock exhaust through the hub. BIII's are rated above 400hp.

Now, I wouldn't mind having a ProCharger on my 502. It is built for it and I do have EMI headers running (switchable) through the transom.
