Just bought a 1989 Sea Ray 160 with a 3.0L. Got a great deal on it but the oil is a little milky and the owner said he thought it has a bad headgasket. Im leaning towards a headgasket as well because of the milky oil. Then my dad said something about it running hot, maybe the passages were blocked?

On that note, I was searching around the net for 3.0L 4 cyl engines and seams that they all come up as marine engines. Since its a chevy block, did the 3.0L 4 cyl come in any gm cars? and is the engine the same? All the 3.0 gm engines i can find is a v-6.

Id love to but a 4.3L v-6 in the boat but not sure if it would fit or if it would mate to the outboard drive?

any info would be great.

thanks!

It does sound like you have water in your oil, and it is most likely due to a gasket issue...

I'm not sure as to your other questions concrning the engine, but am sure othes will chime in with good info...

Straight and simple... do not use a car engine in a boat.

+1

They are marinized car engines, but are not direct replacements. A lot of components are different (starter, alternator, etc) to protect from ignition sources, and some are different due to the environment (different gasket materials, etc)

got the boat home today and pumped the oil out. Also pulled the plugs and cylinder 4 was full of water. Pumped the water out. Plan on doing a compression test in the morning. Im leaning towards a leaking riser manifold?

That would do it.
Depending how long the bottom end has been sitting in this oil/water mixture, the bearings may be shot. How long has the engine been sitting like this?

about a month or so. Lucky its fresh water and not salt. The owner i bought it from didnt know much about engines. Guess ill know more tomorrow when i look at it a little closer.
