290 sundancers 1994-midyear 97 "We need a thread"

GM, I couldnt find any thread labeled "portable generator", nor am I interested in one. But, your comment intrigued me. Can you give us the readers digest version of what happened on that thread?

Gotcha...that went well with my morning coffee. Thanks!

Travis, for what its worth...just one mans story, but my father-in-law has a genny on his rig and it hardly gets used. His words..."not worth it". But, that is just his experience.

Welcome, Travis!

I've been looking for a tv solution as well but haven't decided yet. I currently have a (very old) tv/vcr combo mounted on a shelf that the former owner installed in the front berth, but it no longer works and I want to replace it. I did some searching around, and decided that I probably want a tv with a built-in antenna for catching local signals where available, and with the right ports so I can hook my iPad or Roku up. I already have a portable wifi device so I could stream movies with the right tv. And obviously, it needs to be as streamlined as possible. Just a few of my thoughts, if you're interested. I looked on amazon and found several that might fit the bill, and some of the comments refer to people using them on boats with success.

I have a built-in generator and find I rarely use it, but I don't many long or overnight cruises either, as I'm still learning about the boat.

FNG here...
I have a 94 290 w the twin v6 mercruisers. One of my least favorite things was how long it plowed water before getting on plane. I bought the hydrofoils that attach to the outdrives and they turned out to be the best purchase I have made so far. No only does my boat get out of the hole faster, the bow doesn't rise half as much and I can stay on plane at lower RPM than before.

I have benefitted from from this thread for a while now without much to share. Hope this helps someone.

I'm glad you are happy with the boats performance, but you may still want to keep looking for some other power issue.

I have the same package and with 3 people on board it takes me less than 8-10 seconds to plane without ever dropping the tabs.

See attached for TV location.

It wouldn't let me attach a 2nd pict, but it is a 24" Visio smart tv from Wally World. less than $180.00 and is on a quick release so it can be stored while under way.

Howdy all.

Many years riding in boats, new to buying/owning one. So far I've had a bid accepted on a 1995 290 sundancer with 454/bIII.

Had a survey completed only minor issues (worst was soft/wet spots on swim platform(owner had it fixed)). Other then that little things like a nav light out, sticky toggle switch.

i have sea trial scheduled, and requested engine be not started/cold when I get there. If engine cranks easily, gets on plane easily, sounds good etc.. Should I still request a compression check? Current owner has owned boat since 97 and has been professionally maintained by same mechanic. All documentation available.

Thanks for inputs,

Paul

Nice boat

I would say that all depends how comfortable you are with it.

A survey is recommended but if you have skills then it's up to you.

I drove to Arkansas to get my boat and didn't have it surveyed, but I am somewhat mechanically inclined and knew what to look for.

I would suggest spending time going over everything you can.

Also check the bilge real good with a flashlight and mirror.

Look for the dreaded steering pin leak as well.

Good luck and most of all.....have fun:smt038

Good morning all, first time posting and I have a couple questions for the boaters w/ generators and AC. I've decided to have a genny and AC installed in my '96 290 and I'm wondering if I should go with the Kohler generator that I believe Sea Ray offered from the factory or is there a superior alternative generator I should consider? If I do go with the Kohler, what is the exact model number fits a '96 290? The same question applies to the AC, factory make/model or upgrade to a superior alternative?

Thank you in advance, I appreciate any and all input and help.

Hi everyone. New to the forum. I purchased a 1995 290 w/gen 3 months ago from the marina where I kept my previous boat. I bought it for 7500 deer and invested another 7500. I only have to install the cabin carpet then its finished. Here are some pics.

Hi.

I am also new to the forum. I'm thinking about buying a 290 in 2 years. I'm curious why the 290 96-97 weigh 400 kg more the a 94-95. Other materials, more equipment, reinforcements or what?

Thanks in advance

Good afternoon. I didn't know that the 96-97 weighed 400 kg more than the earlier models. When I looked into a SeaRay I heard from friends in the industry that the overall design and construction of my era of 290 was superior to later models, not necessarily earlier ones. The only answer I can come up with is perhaps the powerplant was different in the earlier models, my '96 has a Mercruiser 454 big block, not a tuned up small block? Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks,

Zak

Hey.

What i know from the manuals om sea ray. And the standard engines in 94-97 is with 454 bravo 3. Twins is optional. So its a little interesting why the 96-97 has more weight

Anyone have a higher hour 4.3 lt boat. I'm looking at buying one with 900 hours and wondering whether there are any inherent problems.
