Bought two stainless steel fishing rod holders which I plan to install in the rear of the cockpit as my 10year old daughter has become an avid fisherman over the last year (a good thing). I already have made a jig and have the right sized drill and caulk/sealant.

Can anyone send pics of the location for the rod holders on the port and starboard gunnels for an '04 280? I've poked around under there and confirmed there's not a lot of room to play. Has anyone done this?

I have 2 of these mounted on the lazarette grab bar - I ordered them from Cabela's. I like them because they swivel and the rod holder unscrews and leaves only the base when they are not in use. The second picture isn't great but you can see the bases behind my bench seat.

I had a Sea Ray SS flush mount rod holder installed which I use for the BBQ. The space is tight underneath, but this is about the only place where it fits nicely.

If you are using the angled flush mount rod holders make sure when you drill the hole you angle the drill the same angle as the holder this way you can make the smallest hole possible and still get the holder installed.

No help for the location though. Sorry.

I've finally been crawling around the boat, twisting and contorting, removing panels, etc. to try and absolutely determine if there is space for a rod holder in both the port and starboard gunwales, somewhere aft of the radar arch on my 2003 280DA.

The starboard side looks like there is room just aft of the arch. The port side looks iffy. I want them to be in the same relative location, but with the aft port side EIM on that gunwale, it makes it hard to determine if there is room. And I don't want to drill a big 'ole hole in my boat before 100% knowing if it will clear!

So...does anyone have photos or has done it and can describe where they put rod holders on a 280DA of my era? gerryb, did you ever install yours?

Thanks,

Tom

Tonka, I really like the cabelas rod holder. Do you have a model number for them? Thanks , JC

Wow, so...impossible?

Has anyone put a flush mount rod holder in the transom area, on either side of the rear locker?

Tonka, do you have one on the starboard side of the locker, or is that a flag holder?

That's the factory flag holder on the starboard side. I don't think there is room for a flush mount on the transom.

Thanks for the info. So I wonder if you couldn't just replace the flag holder with a rod holder at that location? There looks to be enough room inside. I just wonder if there is enough flat area for it to fit. I guess I just need to purchase a couple so I can get a better idea of their dimensions.

I think I am going to install a Scotty flush mount base, similar to my fishing boat. smaller hole to drill and quite a few position options when you drop in the rod holder.

That's not a bad idea. In the beginning, I had thought about a similiar item as you would have more options on where to install it. But then I really liked the look of the flush mount, and their versatility (Magma grill holder, flag holder, etc.). So ideally, I'd like to do the flush mount.

You might want to consider this item from Cabela's. It has a lower profile look but is the same as you are after. Only a small plugged circle sits on the deck when not in use.
