I have to give credit to the mechanics at my marina for solving this gremlin. Bare with me as I try to explain this as I understand it. I developed a stall when docking my 2004 280 Sundancer with Mercruiser 496 BravoIII. The stall was preceeded by several fault alarms via the smartcraft - trim fault, psi fault, pitot... This seemed to only occur at slow speeds when shifting between forward and reverse and turning - dociking situations. Typically I could get the engine to restart but it would quickly fault and stall again.

First we replaced the IAC - ~$100. No change. Next we replaced the PSI sensor - ~$100. No change. Each time the boat was only checked in neutral. Finally the boat was pulled in order to inspect the trim sensors. While inspecting the mechanic noticed that the gimbal ring was pinching the trim sensor cable when turning. This was causing the 5 Volt signal to go to ground, confusing the electronic control module resulting in the various false faults and the stalling. New cable in place and all problems resolved.
