270 Sundeck Thread - Questions & Answers

Steve - not on the swim platform... but on what is basically the back of the rear chair.
Sorry, I think I'm not familiar enough with the boat... but I tried. I would talk with a custom canvas or upholstery shop. I'm sure they can fabricate something nice for you. I don't think you'll find a good option that you can pull off the shelf for an application like that. But, I offer you good luck in the search! :)

hey everyone! Hope it was a great 4th of JULY weekend~ question- I need one of my bow cushions repaired...at the end of last summer we hit a wave pretty hard & cracked the one on the left- any idea best way to pursue, or a place to buy one? thanks!

If the hard bottom piece is what is cracked then I would find some starboard from any marine shop. This is usually what the upholstery is stapled to on the bottom of the cushion part.

Mine cracked when someone stood on it and I had to replace mine too. It may make it a little heavier to pick up each time but you could also try for a slightly thicker piece as well.

Thanks Steve! I appreciate it!

I saw an earlier post about top speed of the 300 and 383. What’s the top speed of the 8.1 496 Magnum. My 270 is about 42. Wondering if maybe the props have been ground down to repair once upon a time.
Any 496 Mags out there?
Thanks

The 6.2L engine gives mid-40's while the 496 should top out high-40's and maybe even a touch over 50. If it's the HO 496, then about mid-50's.

-- Don't base speed on the boat's speedo - use GPS
-- Check your props to see that match the originals. Look on SR's site for the prop chart.
-- Proper use of trim is important
-- A clean hull/running gear is important, as well

Hello all...new to the Forum.....Planning on looking at this boat this weekend...I would appreciate ANY AND ALL insight, experience(s),questions, known issues/problems, concerns, things to look for...

2004 SeaRay 270 SunDeck
MX6.2L MPI Bravo III MCM
According to Dealer.."Recently completed exhaust, gimble bearing and bellows"

Boat will sit in a Wet Slip from May - Until October ..Long Island South Shore NY(Babylon/Bay Shore Area) Most uses will be cruising Great South Bay, runs to Fire Island, sand bar hopping, restaurant stops...

I am mostly worried about the I/O - My other boat has Yamaha HPDI(Had issues but serviceable)

I do love the idea of adding an extended swim platform at some point....from a "Little" research - Am I Looking at 2-4k including install - or closer to 5-6k?

Thank you ALL in advance!!!

I don't boat in salt water, so I don't know much about that part. I do know it is best if you can put it on a lift, and do a fresh water rinse after each use. Otherwise, the boat is solid, and that engine has been in production for a very long time. It's solid and reliable.

Get a good mechanic to do a mechanical survey. Be there when he does it - he will be a wealth of knowledge.

Generally speaking, the boat is good - but if you really want to do your homework, read through this thread - you can be guaranteed it would have been talked about by now. Same goes for the engine. But there will be more maintenance because you're in salt water - if it's been in salt water, really check it out well. Read up on bravoitis.

These kinds of questions come up a lot when someone is looking at a boat. The good thing is that there's really nothing new - it's all be done before (BNL) :) So a little research and searching will get you all the info you need. If you're primarily concerned with the engine, it doesn't matter what boat it's in, either.

Get a good, mechanical survey - it's money well spent.

Best of the New Year to everyone....
I just purchased an OEM Quicksilver/Mercury flush kit part# 898235A01 for my boat so that I can flush the engine with fresh water once I return to the dock as I don't have a closed cooling system.

As I understand it I find the inlet hose coming from the Bravo3 sterndrive to the raw water pump on the engine and put the Y pipe that came with the flush kit in the middle of this hose and then send the new hose that came with the flush kit over to a screw bib located on the side of the engine cover near my walk through in the stern for the garden hose to be used when flushing. This bib only has a block off cap that screws on to keep debris out but not sure if there is any pressure against it when running in the water normally?

Does this kit also require a lock off valve in the line where it Y's off of the inlet water pump line so that water doesn't leak out of that block off cap when it is running normally in the water?

I had a factory kit on one of my boats. You install it as you described. The fitting at the top of the flush line is a block off fitting, it is a shut off if the other end is not pressed into it.

Oh ok, thanks. I guess it is like those quick connect/disconnect fittings then as I couldn't really tell from the photo. Once it arrives, I will see how it all works. Thanks again.

We have been looking at 2015-2018 270 Sundecks, since we would like to upgrade from our 2006 240
Almost all that we find have the factory tower. Is there a way to upgrade the Bimini with the factory tower? it is so small compared to the large Bimini on our 2006.

Ok, got this done as it was a breeze. My mind was over complicating things as I didn't notice the quick disconnect was a one way valve too. I ended up just installing it according tot he instructions where I have to open the engine cover each time because the quick disconnect is attached to the included bracket on top of the exhaust manifold.

I had it in my mind to try and connect that end of the hose onto an existing hose connector flush point close to the transom door but that one is just a simple stainless steel hose screw on type without the one way valve.

I can try later on to see if the new plastic disconnect that came with the kit will fit in the same place as the OEM stainless steel one later but I was in a hurry and just wanted to get out in the boat the other day and be able to flush it properly when I got back.

Many thanks all.

I found the site above that can do custom stuff for any application it seems but I really wish there was a more cost effective simple retractable way to extend shade both to the bow or stern when you are anchored or not moving very fast as I doubt they would stand up to much movement when going very fast.

Thanks for the link. Seems like there are 2 factory towers. The one for water sports has a small Bimini. The basic tower has a much larger sun shade.

Yep, thats my boat in my avatar and it has the wayersports tower with a zippered 2 piece bimini which is very small.

I'm thinking of trying a DIY style extension for the stern that can slide away up underneath the bimini when not extended so it won't flop around when going fast.

Hi, I have a 2003 270 Sundeck 8.2 496 and need to change the sea water pump....my mechanic says the engine needs to be pulled, which I have trouble believing. Has anyone had to change out their pump yet....how was it done.......
Did mine recently. I have a 496. It was an intimidating bitch. Just resign yourself to methodically removing anything in your way... no way around it. Start with the hatch surround. The hardest part (other than access) was the hoses on the pump. I ended up abandoning the red hose from the outdrive and adding a thru hull scoop for inlet water. With that I added a strainer and a flushing fitting (no more muffs). PM me for more.
