I want to remover the back rest that is on the lounge area next to the driver seat. The back rest cushion that faces toward the back of the boat and is mounted next to where the door closes to go into the cabin. Can any one tell me how to remover this cushion.

It can change somewhat from boat to boat, but I just recently did this (actually removed every single piece of cockpit seating) on my own boat (which means it's "fresh" in my memory!) and it's probably very similar to yours. Took me about 3-4 hours to remove everything.

Generally, look for access points to be able to get the nuts on the backside (when the cushions are assembled, bolts are throughbolted before the foam/vinyl is put on). The cushions are then bolted through the fiberglass that it rests against. SOMETIMES, you get lucky and they are attached with plastic "Christmas trees". You could try gently prying the cushion away and look into the gap with a light to see if it's plastic trees, or not.

Now, if the piece you are removing is attached the same way mine was, I had to remove the cloth, headliner-lined piece of wood that is on the cabin-side of that cushion. Unfortunately, to do that, I had to first remove the entire "ceiling" that is above the companionway and galley. This involved accessing hidden screws by (1) removing the light and (2) finding the other hidden screws by feeling through the vinyl headliner for the screw heads and then gently pulling the vinyl out of the crack that it was tucked into.

I just had all my cushions replaced on my 2000 270 and I removed and reinstalled. Get ready for a PITA. All the cushions on my boat were through bolted. That particular cushion has about 12 bolts in in that can only be accessed from inside the cabin. I couldn't really find a good way to remove it without tearing up the cabin, so because I was replacing them - I slashed the cushion and drilled out the through bolts. What a PITA.

But to answer your question, take the interior apart behind the cushion.

Wow!

I got really lucky. Mine was MUCH easier than Dennis' or thompsdw's. My 98 250 has a vinyl covered, 2'X2' panel above the entry to the mid cabin. A couple of screws to remove that, then I had to feel around for a handful more that actually held the backrest in place. 15 minutes tops & it was off.

I have a guy who says he can do the repair while it is in the boat. PS a good auto repair guy that does many car lots. We will see how this quick easy fix works. All the other pieces came out of the boat very easily. Thanks for the help.

i have a 1999 Sundancer 270 DA and I am trying to get both back rests off the boat to be reupholstered ....will I have to remove the interior wall / ceiling to get access (assuming they are thru bolted), or could they be affixed using Christmas tree pins....what a PITA...

Thanks..Mark

It will most likely be bolted through, so yes.

An alternate point of view. They have been in place nearly 20 years and never moved, so yes, it is a PITA to remove them now, but they will be secure for decades if you resecure them properly.

Hi MM, thanks for the reply...Yes, Sea Ray got back to me in 2 hours today indicating they are through bolted. I saw an earlier old thread that someone may have diagrams on how to remove the interior ceiling etc...to expose the back side of the bolts. Evidently, ceiling comes off first, then the portion that is on the opposite side of the bolster. As far as the port side bolster, one needs to remove the mirror etc..from the mid cabin to access above it where the thru bolts come through for that bolster...thanks! Mark

We are dealing with the same issue on our boat. Good luck with it.

Mark, it's not diagrams, but if you're handy, look at my post above for info on how to remove the ceiling. It's not hard - just take some time to figure it out. When I originally did mine, I didn't have any diagrams or descriptions to go by. Look it over real well and what I wrote above (and what you may have found in other threads) will start to make more sense.

FYI... there were two 270DA's produced in '99 - as you ask questions, you'll want to be specific to which model you have. Look at SR's website, if needed, then fill out your signature.

I have a 2000 270 and did this job. It's a royal PITA. That being said it's doable but go slow. I posted it years ago but going from memory you have to remove the upper ceiling panel with the light fixture. There's a screw in the light that holds the panel up. You'll have to remove the closet and I also had to remove the port window. The panel that is slanted has a screw all the way around in the aft cabin. Searay is really good at hiding screws. I also remember what a PITA the side panel with the mirror was because you have to disconnect the wire to the outlet. When you have the panels out you can see the screws. The screw for the side back rest are difficult to reach and all the raw fiberglass in there is sharp so be careful.
If you're doing all the upholstery over on the helm side the ribbed part of the captains seat just pulls out to get access to the bolts for the upper back of the rear facing seat. There is one screw or bolt that you'll have to access through the rear cabinet where the cockpit AC outlet is.
Like I said it's a doable project but go slow and take pictures as you go along. Reassembly is faster because once you get it all apart it doesn't seem to be all that hard. I hope this helps.

My boat is not the SE or Special Edition. I will check your thread. Thanks!!
