Hi.

I am looking at several older SR's. One I am looking at is an 88 268. The boat is immaculate in appearance. The head has one of the those porta potties. Would it be possible and or difficult to replace that with a marine head and holding tank set up? I would not do it myself as the idea of cutting a hole in the bottom for the sea cock would give me nightmares lol.

We spend nights on the boat and really do not want to deal with dumping and or having that pumped out every day.

Thanks

Bruce

You would only need to cut a thru-hull if you were adding the overboard discharge (macerator), otherwise you'd just need to cut a hole for the pump out fitting on the deck and the breather vent. There's a lot more to it than what I've mentioned but cutting a hole in the hull is not necessary for a holding tank set up.

We had an 87' 268 Sundancer way back that we did exactly what you are thinking of. It was straight forward.
We replaced the porta poti with a manual flush head plumbed to the fresh water system in the boat (We are salt water boaters and did not want the rotten egg smell). Make sure to put a check valve so water from the toilet can not back flow to the water system. We also installed a holding tank in the bilge and had a sanitation hose that ran from the head Through the aft cabin and then through the bulkhead to the bilge. I think there was access behind a panel on the starboard side of the aft cabin that the waste hose easily fit in. The hole in the aft cabin bulkhead was sealed up with a lot of boat life calk to prevent fumes and water from getting into the cabin.
If I remember correctly, the boat had a masscerator and deck pump out fitting from the factory even though it came with the porta potti.
The flushing toilet upgrade was a huge plus. The other upgrade that was awesome was a hatch air conditioner for hot days/nights when we were tied up. This also made the 268 much more comfortable.
Good luck with the boat and the project.
