Re: Water Temp?

And here's question #1... Is the "water temperature" reading on the Smartcraft the sea temp or engine temp?

You get both readings.

If you want to do some good reading before you get the boat, you can download the Smartcraft Manual or any others you want ahead of time. I did that before I took delivery of my boat and learned a lot just by reading all this stuff and it shortened my learning curve considerably once I took delivery. This link will tell you how to download the manuals. http://www.byowneryachts.com/forums/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1952

Thanks Dave - the Merc manual was actually what led me to my question as it says the sea temp reading requires a sensor. Wasn't sure if the boat was so equipped - thrilled to know that it is. And trust me - I've read the owner's manual cover to cover many times since deciding on this model :smt001 . Great to see that your "sticky" link has the other equipment not featured in the SR manual. Can you tell me the model info on the vacu-flush and A/C system to be looking up on those sites?

In looking at the parts manual for my boat, it shows an A/C "access door" on page 46. I know there is no such door on my boat but I was wondering if anyone with a 2005 or newer has such a door on theirs. :smt017

As far as I know if I need to get to the A/C unit, I need to remove the whole side panel in the mid berth that covers it.

Dock Line

Two feet of snow this weekend wasn't encouraging, but at least I can start buying new gear. Conventional wisdom says I get 1/2" nylon double braid line. I'm thinking 10' x 4 and 28' (or 30) x 2. What do you keep aboard?

white table storage

I have the white table as well.............BTW.......have you found Sea Ray's "designated storage area" for that thing?

Dave S...this is a few pages back ...but on my 2005 260. The designated storage is under the front V-berth cushion under the dinette table...there is a small hook on the front panel to hold it from moving around...was a bit inconvenient ....but it was out of the way if desired

I created my own storage space for the table.............check out this posting http://www.byowneryachts.com/forums/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1252&highlight=designated

Dave and Others: Have you confirmed that the mid-berth side panel has to be removed to get at the A/C? My boat doesn't have the access door either -- makes me wonder if the A/C is actually in there?

Yes.......you have to remove it. Apparently at one time Sea Ray must have contemplated an access door and then never followed thru. The good news is you won't have to get in there often unless the unit stops working.

GPS Install

If you have spent time at the helm of an '05 or '06 260DA perhaps you can help... I'm working with my dealer right now long distance on the installation of my Northstar 6100i (6.4"). It is going to go in front of the blank panel to the left of the gauges. The top of the unit will inevitably breach the top of that section of the helm by a bit. What I would like to know is how many inches above that part of the helm I reasonably have before it interferes with my visibility when seated (I mostly pilot standing, which will be a non-issue, but sometimes it's nice to sit on a long-haul). I don't recall from my limited time on the boat if, from a seated position, two inches or so will make a significant impact on forward-port visibility. I'm 6' tall.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Red Stripe...........I really think you ought to reconsider and have it installed in the intended space on the dash. I have been using my Navman for over six months now and I do not find it at all awkward to use in that location. When you are seated it seems very natural in that location and when you are standing it's not bad either. I really think Sea Ray has designed the dash properly for mounting a chartplotter in the intended location. Keep in mind when you are standing you will be looking down at your instruments and at your Northstar anyway even if it's mounted higher on the dash.

But, if you are absolutley convinced that you have to mount it higher on the dash then I dont think those few inches you mention will interfere with your line of sight when seated. But if I was going to mount it up on the dash, my choice would be to move it over to the right as far as possible and mount it in front of or on the panel that has the Tweeter. That way line of sight is not nearly as much of a concern no matter how high it's mounted and it also gets it out of the way of the entrance to the cabin doorway where it's more likely to get bumped going into or comming out of the cabin. It's also less likely to be buffeted by wind if you run with the windshiled door open. And on the left side of the panel, you may find that it causes you some grief when trying to snap the mooring cover over your windshield because you have to stand on the door and dash area just to reach over your windshield to get to the snaps at the bottom of the windshield.

Dave - thanks for the insight. I'm glad to hear the impact on visibility will be minimal - that's what I needed to know to move forward. I just spoke with the tech and he's going to keep the profile as low and ergonomic as possible so as not to interfere with anything - someone will bump the dash before hitting the unit going into the cabin. I was hoping to place it there as I have the GPS on my Sundeck mounted similarly to how the Navman mounts in the 260. For my purposes, I found myself diverting my eyes for too long if I needed a quick reference while standing. I've seen set-ups where people have blocked the tweeter on the right - the audiophile in me won't allow for that. I'll be sure to post pictures when it's all done.

My, how quiet this thread has been :smt015 . Well, fortunately I delayed my trip for my in-water delivery by a week and avoided having it cancelled due to the storm. I'm heading to the dealership (about 4 hours away) this weekend when the weather's supposed to be cooperating for my official delivery and then plan to spend the next few days there using the boat for the shakedown before it gets trucked to my marina. Other than the basics, are there any items on a new 260 that I should be keeping an eye out for as I develop my puchlist? Things that rattled or fell off or failed early on? I have to be as thorough as possible because, although my local tech will be handling warranty items, I do not have the luxury of a nearby dealer. Any and all thoughts are appreciated!

I just took delivery of a 320 - I had a 260 when this thread started -

Make sure EVERYTHING works - every feature... Review the gelcoat and go over the boat closely.

Welcome red stripe to the 260da crowd. I really love mine. I do think you east coast folks are a tough crowd. I complain during winter boating when its 60 degrees outside. Enjoy the maiden voyage.

Our boat has been almost bullet proof! The only things that have failed in the 1st 60 hours is one of the spoiler lights lost its ground, the sub (polk momo) was not working and the shower sump developed a leak in it.

Success

The shakedown trip was brilliant  . Mother nature knew what I needed to do and cooperated. After three days the engine hours are up to a massive 5.5. Slept on board two nights - even the glomex pulled in some, well, two good TV signals. Thankfully, no engine issues or mechanicals on the punchlist (although the steering wheel came from the factory upside down, which I'm told is not uncommon). A handful of little things that the dealer is right on top of. Northstar went in perfectly - the smartcraft interface is great (pictures coming). Just a long two day wait 'till the truck brings her to me on Friday!

Home...

Launched, christened and home. Finally. And if you look at the picture on the bottom... sometimes it's good to be lonely. Mission accomplished :smt038
