Hey Everyone, New here to the Sea Ray community or at least soon to be... I am purchasing a new 250 SLX with the 6.2 Merc DTS / Bravo 3...... Is this enough power for this boat or should i look to upgrade to the 496? any thoughts are appreciated ........

Vinny,

I have never run one but, a couple of years ago one of our SR sales guys saw me on the lake prior to delivering a 250 SLX and motioned me to hit it. He let me get ahead of him and then he got on it. However, he could never close the gap. So we were both running around 47-48 GPS. The 250 had a 6.2 with silent choice exhaust. He claimed he was bumping up against the rev. limiter ( right around 5,400 rpm). I don't remember what pitch props he was turning, but I believe wide open throttle for the 6.2 is 4,800-5,200 rpm. So if he went up a couple of inches his boat might have touched 50 or thereabouts.

Nice boat. I don't think it would be under powered with a 6.2, but a 496 sure would be nice.

I'm guessing that should be fine. I had a 1997 250Da with the 5.7 LX EFI and B3. It was perfectly powered. But, you know what they say, you can't go wrong with more power, especially in boats. The problem is, in your case, going from the 6.2 to the 496, you add quite a bit of weight. I'm sure some current owners will chime in. No offense to 6.2 owners, but I would consider giving more weight to the owners of the 496's. Almost no one will tell you their boat is under powered.

I have the 350 MPI and the fiberglass sports tower which adds a lot of weight and drag. At WOT, I am running 42 mph at 5000 rpm. If I would have opted for a larger motor, I would have gone with the 496. That said, it is rare I can go WOT on Lake Michigan so I could not rationalize an extra $10,000 in order to hit 50 MPH. It is a great boat and I am sure you will enjoy it no matter what engine you get.

What was said above in regards to the top speed comparison is correct. Between the propping and the drive ratio, the top end is exactly the same. However, the 496 will provide more grunt on the take-off. If you plan on having a full boat most of the time and possibly doing watersports, then, in my opinion, the 496 becomes a legitimate option. Of course, having the bigger engine can never hurt, both from a performance standpoint and re-sale. But, it does run very well with the 6.2.

In the end, you have decide how you are going to be using the boat and pick the engine based on that. If you get to a point where you're "on the fence", go big.

Thanks again everyone....... I am going to go with the 6.2 and 320 horses..... It will mostly be myself the wife and two kids....we are all still novices when it comes to watersports so i am sure this boat will be more then amble for the time to come.......Thanks again for the feedback !!

I have a 270 SLX w/ the 6.2. The reason I'm not underpowered is the Admiral. I had the boat 4 years before I knew how fast it would go. When her friends are on board, I can't go even get on plane because they'll spill their drinks or won't be able to hear conversation. I could've gotten by with a 4.3.

Yep... I second what 250slx was saying. Likewise, I have the 350 with the BIII-23p props. By no means is it underpowered. Pull's a 200# slalom ski'er up and out of the water quick. Only complaint is the number of rpm's the engine is turning when cruising at that comfortable 30mph.... 4000+. The 6.2 can only be better. Would also love to have the 496, at least for a moment until I think of the extra 10 grand you'd need to spend to get it.

Dennis, what is your max speed with your 270 SLX?
