I recall a while ago someone with a 280 DA posting pictures of their handy wood working skills on a port cup holder. It really was a nice project. Well, I’m no good at wood working and don't have that kind of time either, so here is my Cool Mod.

This was quite a complex project and spendy at that; approximately 10 minutes and $.88.

If you aren’t familiar, the original design of this common cup holder, which I believe was used on several models in the mid 2000’s, was flush mounted to the port dash. This is a problematic design due to the fact that most any type of cup, bottle, etc. tips over. By installing the pictured nylon shim(s), the height is increased from that of the original and tip over’s are thus prevented.

Note the PB Blaster, I here the stuff works wonders…

With the narrow base I would worry any pressure side to side will crack it. I've been thinking of something similar but oval shaped to support it better.

I definitely had the same concerns going into this project. I looked for something that would provide more surface area on the underside but had no luck. My contingency was a washer on top of the shim if it was too loose to the touch. However, after putting the shims in place and tugging/tipping it a bit, I became comfortable.

I don’t think that a water bottle, cup, etc. causes too much lateral stress. Keeping in mind I am an idiot by trade, not an engineer.

I’ve seen some of your woodwork and bet you could go that route and come up with something pretty high-speed too. Give it a quick shot and put it back to normal if is doesn't feel good to the touch...$.88 at Home Depot and all.

I wouldn't worry about whatever you put in it damaging the thing, it's someone leaning on it inadvertantly.

Did you install the 3-bagger? Do you have any pics?

I saw someone else install one on top of the existing plastic one, but it seemed really brittle.

I think the newer models, including the 240, 260 and 280 have a metal version similar to the one made by Edson…

I used these on mine. Mounted over the top of the plastic (drilled holes through). Installed another one on the dash by the right window too.

Risk vs. reward for me…I got real sick of hitting a bump and cleaning up (insert beverage here)…

Now watch, next weekend, someone will put their full palm weight on the damn thing and I will be at Marine Max with my jaw dropped when the guy behind the counter tells me it is a $133.74 part, PLUS SHIPPING!!! Or something like that anyway!

Noted issue though...

Actually I bought the two hole versions. My 330 has a similar low plastic "cupholder" on the port side, but with two holes. The edson two hole aligned perfectly with the SR plastic so now the plastic one helps hold the base of a tall can from tipping.

To be more clear, I mounted it to the fiberglass itself (passed through a hole I put in the plastic one and mounted to the console). The edson is very firmly mounted on the console glass (a very difficult time getting the bolt on through the speaker hole to the left). The one on the console to the right of my chart cover was dead simple compared to the port side.

The same factory cup holder broke on my 240 the first year and it was secured in the factory location. The dealer's tech leaned on the holder - done split in half. The dealer felt terrible as even then it was not replaceable as the Sea Ray supplier stopped making it. The replacement is a generic white which I finally got through Marine Max. It looked so horrible, I ended up glueing the old one.

Be careful with one you got .... it may be the only one in that color.

Man, these things seem like quite a commodity…

Why in the Hell would anyone have their hands near the cup holder area (for bodyweight support) anyway? It isn’t really a high traffic area, is it?

I don’t get it???

Try going downstairs to use the head when you are rock'n in 4 foot waves, you'll grap anything:grin:
