240 Sundeck Thread - Questions and Answers

I have a 2008 240 SD with the MX6.2 MPI engine. Winterizing always meant fogging the engine and replacing the drain plugs, but moved to a new location and my new marine service guy had difficulty with supply chain last year and just removed the 4 blue engine drain plugs and left them for me to put back in. I've googled and YouTubed and can't find out where the drain plugs are on this engine, I've found one at the front and one low on the starboard side, does anyone have a description or diagram or photo of the location of all the plugs? Seems I will have to remove the padded cowling at the front of the engine compartment to get at the front and port side at all, its a tight fit for this old soul and impossible to look, I can only feel around. Any help would be appreciated, I really thought this would be an easy find.

You should have 5 blue plugs.
Thermostat housing (easiest)
Water distribution housing - port side, down low facing toward the bow
Cool fuel module - Starboard side down low facing toward the bow

FYI only a replacement cool fuel housing has this. The original didnt come with one. Many of these housings have been replaced due to paint chips or corroded cooling lines.

These first 3 are easy to see and access without removing the bulkhead in front of the engine

The last 2 are on the raw water pump inlet and outlet. Removing the bulkhead is a must (for me). They are down low, very low. You can see them OR touch them, but not both (again for me) They are toward the rear of the pump, face toward the starboard side and stacked vertically about 3" apart.

Google a picture of the pump for reference and do not run the engine without them.

Thanks so much for this easy to follow reply, felt like I was looking (and feeling) for a needle in a haystack not knowing where I should be looking. I did just get 4 plugs back so it seems likely the cool fuel module is still original (I mistakenly identified seeing one on the starboard side in my original post and that's incorrect, was the port side down low). Seems the raw water pump will be the two I haven't identified yet, will be taking the housing off this morning to have a look.
Its hard to find any information specific to my engine but I believe the 6.2 is just a bored out 350 MAG so any notes or images referring to the 350 should be the same for my engine and valid for reference in the future, correct?

Yea, the 6.2 and 350 MAG are very similar on the exterior.

Thanks. So I've found three drain spots, it seems my water pump has just one that I can identify I've included a photo, seems my pump is different than those I've seen online with two drains. Am I missing something on the pump?
Also, the port side plug in the block was very difficult to thread, and it was different than my other plugs with two small O rings and one large one. I couldn't get it flush, think that's ok? The other plugs look newer and have just one large O ring went in flush easily in the other ports.

The picture you included is the water distribution housing, not the water pump. The water distribution housing is port side front of the motor.

the raw water pump the the large pulley down low on the starboard side front of the motor.

Jeb, with 4 blue drain plugs, you probably have one in the t-stat housing, one in the water distribution manifold and two in the sea water pump. As noted, your picture doesn't show the sea water pump.

I'm not sure what you're referring to regarding that "port side block drain". Your description does not describe a drain. Post a picture - but my guess is that you're dealing with the wrong thing and are confused about what it is.

Thanks to Epsos, JayHawk and Lazy Daze, you are all correct and got me on the right track, job done. I had exactly the configuration pictured by JayHawk and described here. The port side drain was in fact just a thread in the block presumably for some previous attachment no longer used - it wasn't a drain. Took me a bit but got it, I so appreciate this forum and how helpful everyone is. Ready to run! Thanks guys.

I have owned my '06 240 SD for about 6 years now. I am finally going to upgrade my sound system. The remote to the stereo above the steering finally gave out. I am looking at completely removing the single DIN and installing a full function head unit in place of the remote on the dash.

I read earlier in the thread the speakers are about 6" but with slight modifications, 6.5" can be used. Has anyone had issues with 6.5" speakers?

I would like to know if anyone has installed a subwoofer? I saw the question asked a few years ago but no one responded.

Thanks for your assistance.

When we had our 2006, I replaced the factory speakers with 6.5's, no problems. My factory Sea Ray grills were over Sony speakers, and covers removed by twisting clockwise (complete opposite of right tight/left loose). Other folks have had different results.

As for the Sub, factory location was side firing under the port lounger. a 10" I believe. We went the easy way, and I wedged a Bazooka Tube under the helm with the ice chest. The 10" tube fit between the ice chest rails and the aft bulkhead. Factory Clarion amp had subwoofer out, and the fusebox is there as well. Used it that way for over 10 years.

06 240 sundeck. I have 2 issues. Not sure if they are related. Looking for some advice.

1st...when running at any speed and trying to switch modes on the vesselview/smartcraft it always jumps back to displaying trim and bounces between 1 and 2. Almost positive I have a bad/dirty sending unit. Pretty straight forward...I think.

The 2nd issue is after running for an extended period (15-20min on the lake) the motor dies for a split second then continues to run flawlessly. When this happens I get a message along the lines of "lost connection to motor" I can't recall exactly. It's a split second where the message appears and I feel the motor "die" but it comes right back to life and only has happened twice on 2 separate occassions,, both this year. Once while taking the kids tubing the other while running down the lake against the wind. There are no alarms or other indications of a problem.

Do y'all think these 2 things are related? If not, what could be the cause of the 2nd issue? This is my 3rd year owning the boat but 1st year that I've kept it in a wet slip. The problems just started this year. Motor is 350 mag. I appreciate any input/advice. Thanks in advance!

For the first issue, go into your smartcraft settings and disable the “trim pop up display”. Sorry I don’t remember exactly what it’s called.

When set to “on” the trim setting will show every time you adjust the trim. In your case, the erratic sensor makes the system think that you are constantly adjusting the trim.

For the second issue, try a wiggle test. With the engine running, wiggle as many wire harness connections that you can. Wiggle the ignition key too. See if the motor stumbles.

Also clean as many wire connections that you can, including the battery cables and ground connections on the block.

Also try wiggling the fuses. Had a similar problem to #2 that I traced to a loose fuse holder.

Thank you both. I'll give the wiggle test a try this weekend and make sure all connections are clean and tight.

My understanding is the 6.2 and 5.7 are exactly the same. The 6.2 just has a longer stroke.

Hello everyone! I read all 81 pages of this thread which got me really excited about picking up a 2001 240SD with the 5.7 and bravo 3.

Based on the comments through the years I haven't seen a lot of complaints other than the peanut pads so that's even more exciting. I figure there will be some questions coming from me in the next couple weeks as I get fully immersed in this sea ray so I may as well introduce myself and say thanks for the years of conversations previously posted!

I'll post pics later once I get it cleaned up a bit.
I'm in Port Charlotte, FL.

Congratulations. It really is a great layout, perfect for so many uses.

Finally picked her up. She's filthy inside but for the price I paid I can clean her up.

Congrats. We loved our 240. We just ended up with more friends and family that wanted to tag along then could comfortably fit on the boat. When it was just the 4 of us and even with another family, we had plenty of room. Hope you enjoy the 240.
